History

The Irken were a bipedal humanoid species that were native to the planet Irk. At some point, they established an expansionistic regime that became known as the Irken Empire. In their history, they once encountered the Planet Jackers that were a humanoid race who stole entire worlds and their moons which they transported to feed their dying sun. This encounter led to the establishment of the Irken-Planet Jacker Treaty designed to prevent any outbreak of hostilities. Under its terms, the Planet Jackers were not to target any worlds that the Irken military had designated for conquest.

To conquer their cosmos, they launched Operation Impending Doom that sought to bring the universe under their control. Their plans fell into disarray when newly promoted Invader Zim was given command of a giant combat mecha. Before it could be launched, he went berserk and had it attack leading to it devastating the staging world of the Irken Empire before he stopped. As a result, their plans were put on hold and Zim was banished to the planet Foodcourtia.

Overview

In appearance, the Irken were a race of green skinned humanoids with oval shaped red eyes and antennae giving them a somewhat insectoid form. An organ that was part of their anatomy was their squeedilyspooch. Reproduction was done so through artificial means due to their advanced technology and automation. Water was shown to have some level of discomfort to Irken skin. When off-world, they were vulnerable to the effects of the Galactic Equinox where the experience a hideous moulting effect. Prior to the appointed time, they were shown to be scratching at their skin with the process leading to them experiencing more discomfort until the appointed hour had passed.

A superior class of soldier within the empire was that Invaders who were sent to infiltrate worlds. They were tasked with preparing the way for the invasion by the Irken Empire. The empire established ceremonies whereby select Irken were appointed target worlds to infiltrate and conquer. Invaders were equipped with self-destruct mechanisms on their suits that they were to activate in case of discovery. A standard piece of equipment to all Invaders were ocular implants allowing their eyes to see across great distances.

Irken were grown with machines being involved in their gestation with new members of their kind emerging from pods. The newly born Irken emerged from the pods where machines implanted their PAK onto their backs as they gained consciousness and immediately became citizens of the empire. As a result, individual Irken did not have parents as such with technology having substituted this role in their society.

An item available to their empire were Microgoggles that could be used to see germs. They could place telescopic helmet rigs on their heads allowing them to magnify their vision over landscapes.

Irken made use of sophisticated computer technology that were able to respond to their needs and requests. Facilities were controlled by sophisticated artificial intelligence brains that managed their functions from a central computer core. If defective, a solution was to replace the artificial brain with a new one.

One type of construct built by the Irkens was SIR (Standard-Issue Information Retrieval) Units that were robotic machines. In their dormant, they resembled simple cylinder but when activated they morphed into bipedal robots. They were assigned for use by the elite ranks of the Invaders. Despite possessing no mouths, they were able to communicate and followed the commands of their assigned charge. SIR Units were tasked with gathering vital intelligence from observing a planetary population in order to better advise the Invader on their next course of action. They were equipped with guidance system boxes that were the finest example of Irken guidance technology. These machines were able to activate a projector from their head allowing them to generate a holographic screen to communicate with their master.

They had access to machines that provided them a range of disguises allowing the Irken to infiltrate a target world. Irken had the means of shrinking themselves and their equipment to microscopic size allowing them to invade the body of biological organisms. Once inside, they could take over nervous systems and eliminate knowledge within the brain. The Irken could also harvest organs from other organisms and implant them in their own body as a means of evading detection by medical exams.

They made use of giant bipedal mecha war machines that were able to devastate planets.

Irkens had the ability to rapidly build facilities for their operations. This began with a small handheld device with the Irken simplying drawing a structure before activating the machine. The device was dropped into the ground where it burrowed deep underground to establish a foundation. From there, tendrils and other machinery activated to construct the structure it was assigned to build. Invaders made use of such machines to construct buildings that resembled native construction to serve as a base of operations without drawing the attention of the natives. These facilities included automated defences that were hidden as native wild life and had robots that acted as family to the Irken in their human disguise so as to not draw suspicion. Such facilities could include a hidden observatory allowing the Irken to see events on other worlds.

As an interstellar people, the Irkens had a range of spacecraft at their disposal allowing them to journey to other worlds with ease. An out-of-date cruiser design used by their people were Voot Runners that were capable of being manned by a single Irken.
