Jack O'Lantern (Folklore)
According to legend, Jack o'Lantern was a wicked soul who had somehow forced Satan not to take him to Hell when his time came. Unfortunately for Jack, when he died, Heaven refused to take him, and the Devil honored his promise, forcing Jack to become a wandering spirit. As he left the gates of Hell, the Devil gleefully tossed him a hot coal to light his way- he placed it within a turnip, creating the first traditional jack o'lantern. Supposedly, Jack still wanders, an outcast from the afterlife.
