James Worthington Gordon Jr.

A few years later, James Jr. was kidnapped by Arnold Flass who was a former member of the GCPD that wanted revenge against James' father, Jim Gordon. James Jr. was taken back to Gotham where he was tied up inside a sack that was then hanged on the edge of an abandoned bridge. James Jr. was rescued moments later by Batman. (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Annual v1 #2)

James Jr. has displayed violent behavior from an early age; as a child, he kills animals and takes them apart as a hobby. He was also implicated in the disappearance of one of his sister's friends, Bess Keller. Barbara swears that she saw James carrying Bess' keychain, although this was never proven. (Detective Comics v1 #875) His antisocial behavior contributes to his parents' divorce. (Batgirl v4 #8) He is mentioned having left Gotham to travel around the country at some point. (Detective Comics v1 #874)

When James Jr. returned to Gotham years later, he began secretly following his father. (Detective Comics v1 #871) James Jr. then decided to confront his father in a diner. (Detective Comics v1 #872) He explained that he was taking medication to curb his violent impulses, and is trying to turn his life around. James Jr. announces he is planning to get a job at Leslie Thompkins' clinic, and asks his father to help him by in turn asking Dick Grayson to not speak against his application. (Detective Comics v1 #874) While hunting down old cases, Commissioner Gordon meets another murderer who might have been responsible for the death of Bess Keller, and begins to believe that his son may indeed have changed. (Detective Comics v1 #875) In reality, however, James Jr. has become a serial killer. (Detective Comics v1 #878) Thompkins insists that James Jr. was doing a great job, but his father suspects otherwise and has Barbara test his medication. They discover that James Jr. has reversed the formula to increase his homicidal impulses, and correctly deduce he is going to poison an infant nutritional facility. (Detective Comics v1 #879)

Barbara Eileen Gordon is attacked with Joker toxin when the Joker escapes from Arkham Asylum, but it turns out James Jr. was using this as a diversion to kidnap his sister. (Detective Comics v1 #880) Batman attempts to find them, and James Jr. explains that he has been orchestrating things for a long time as he figured out Batman's secret identity. He aided the super-villain Dealer and even broke the Joker out of Arkham. Believing that empathy makes you weaker, he seeks to destroy Batman as the 'weakest man in Gotham' by showing him the error of his ways and creating a new generation of psychopaths. Barbara stabs him in the eye, then Batman bursts through the window and reveals he injected him with a tracking device. James Jr. tries to run away but his father shoots him in both legs and stops him from falling off a bridge. It was left ambiguous whether or not his plan actually succeeded. Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. James Gordon, Jr.

After his father's kidnapping and his sister's crippling at the hands of the Joker, James became obsessed with the Joker. (Joker v2 #10)

He tried to murder his own mother, which forces Barbara to wound him by throwing a Batarang into his eye. (Batgirl v4 #19)

James Gordon Jr. was seen at Belle Reve, where he learns that Thinker and King Shark are building a satellite. (Suicide Squad v4 #24) James Gordon Jr. finds Amanda Waller who proceeds to bring him to a secret sub-level in the prison. On the way, she tells him the history of the Task Force program and all the failed attempts that lead up to Task Force Team X before being found by King Shark. James Gordon Jr. holds him off telling him that if he kills Waller, he will never know who the identity of his real father. (Suicide Squad v4 #25) Harley Quinn arrives at Belle Reve and drops OMAC near James Gordon Jr. James Gordon Jr. confronts her and puts a knife in her back and an explosive collar around her neck where he learns that she betrayed the team in the Rockies. James Gordon Jr. also learns that the Thinker is planning to use OMAC. While James Gordon Jr. is talking to Harley, the Thinker has taken OMAC and begins transferring his mind to it. Now activated, OMAC proceeds to attack Amanda Waller, James Gordon Jr., Harley Quinn, King Shark and Kamo. (Suicide Squad v4 #26)

After a murder, his sister Barbara noted the similarity of the death to James and decided to visit him in Blackgate to check if he had escaped. (Batgirl Annual v5 #2)

  • James Gordon, Jr. Was created by Frank Miller and Dave Mazzucchell where he made his first appearance in Batman v1 #407 (May, 1987).
  • In The New 52, Barbara Gordon is the biological daughter of James Gordon and Barbara Eileen Gordon making her the biological older sister of James Jr. and retcons their relationship as step-siblings.

In other media

Films

  • In The Dark Knight, James Gordon Jr. was shown in the live-action film where he was portrayed by actor Nathan Gamble. The young boy was shown as being one of the children of James Gordon. Following the death of his fiancĂ© Rachel Dawes, Harvey Dent was driven mad where he blamed Commissioner Gordon for her demise. After becoming Two-Face, he proceeded to take his revenge by attempting to kill Gordon's son but he was tackled by Batman who pushed him off a cliff before he could shoot the boy.
  • In The Dark Knight Rises, the character was not referenced in the setting of the live-action film sequel. However, it was revealed that after Harvey's attempt on Gordon's family that Jim Gordon and his wife separated with the latter moving with their children to Cleveland.
  • In Batman: Year One, an infant James Gordon, Jr. appeared in the setting of the animated film adaptation. He came to be taken hostage by Carmine Falcone's nephew Johnny Vitti only to be saved by Batman.
