Biography
James Natale was a male human who was born in the modern age where he came to operate in the criminal underworld. By adulthood, he came to operate as a fixer for the Maggia and had a ruthless reputation where he helped clean up any messes for his bosses. One day, he approached his superiors about thinning their ranks as they had too many new recruits that were making mistakes that he had to fix. It was then that his bosses took Jimmy to meet a scientist in their employ named Professor Charlie Goss who had been hired to conduct some genetic work for them. Goss had come across the research that was responsible for creating the likes the Scorpion Mac Gargan and the Fly Richard Deacon. The Maggia heads after seeing the work done by Mysterio when he worked for them by this point had desired their own super-powered agent to work on their behalf. At the time, Jimmy believed they were asking him to scour their ranks for someone ruthless for the task but then his bosses knocked him out and forced Professor Goss to perform the experiment. This saw the transformation of Jimmy into the new Vulture who would prey on their weaker members and elements of society. The process resulted in a mind-wipe for Jimmy so that he would forget the moment he was betrayed but the Maggia never counted on the fact that he would go rogue. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #624)
He first encountered Spider-Man when he stumbled upon Vulture devouring one of his victims on a rooftop. His abilities, such as acid vomit, took Spider-Man by surprise, and he was forced to retreat while temporarily blind. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #593) Spider-Man lured him out later on and fought him, a battle that took them to Yankee Stadium. After capturing him, he broke his arms and left him for the police. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #594) Electro, under the orders of Sasha Kravinoff, freed him from Ryker's and let him run wild. He began to remember things and came after crime bosses involved in his creation. This scared the mob to release information falsely accusing Mayor J. Jonah Jameson of being involved. This news made its way to the Vulture after interrogating a captured crime boss. Seeking revenge, Vulture came for him and killed one of his security staff while Jameson fled. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #623) Spider-Man tried to defeat Vulture, but he was able to escape. He then targeted another crime boss involved in his creation and forced the truth out of him. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #624)
Natale later took part in Doctor Octopus's bounty for Lily Hollister's newborn child. This resulted in him attacking Spider-Man who was protecting the infant in Hamilton Heights, Manhattan. Before long, however, the Freak, who was also seeking the child, attacked the Vulture, allowing Spider-Man to escape. Vulture and Freak soon put aside their differences, and teamed up to get Spider-Man. They found him on a rooftop; while Spider-Man knocked Freak out of a fight with a water tower, the Vulture snatched the baby, only to find that it was a bundle of garbage. Stunned by the decoy, the Vulture was swiftly punched out by Spider-Man. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #644) The Vulture, having further mutated, was hired by the criminal organization called the Exchange where he was tasked with ambushing the Punisher at an abandoned building where they were planning to execute one of their hitmen. (Punisher v8 #2) The Vulture grabbed the Punisher in his foot-talons and took off into the sky. He tried to drop the vigilante to his death, but the Punisher grabbed on to the Vulture's ankle and refused to let go - and then stabbed the Vulture in the leg. They engaged in a brutal battle in the air, as the Punisher stabbed the Vulture repeatedly in the torso, and the Vulture slashed Castle's face and burned him with acid. The Vulture nearly scratched Castle's eye out, but instead the Punisher managed to stab the Vulture first in the heart, then in the jaw, killing him causing them both to plummet to the ground. (Punisher v8 #3)
Overview
Personality and attributes
As the Vulture, he had a red-costume with wings and his face was largely exposed except for his mouth. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #593) Among the mob, he came to be known as Jimmy the Fixer and had a reputation for cleaning up messes for his bosses. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #624)
Rumours began to circulate about him in the underworld where it was said that the new Vulture targeted weak and wounded criminals that could no longer defend themselves. These same stories spoke of him as being transformed by the mob and that his predation on criminals was an act of revenge for turning him into a hideous freak. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #594)
Powers and abilities
Jimmy was originally an ordinary human but a skilled criminal and a fixer in the ranks of the Maggia. This was until he was forced to participate in an experiment that modified his genetics and gave him superhuman abilities in a process that had created the likes of the Scorpion and the Fly. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #624)
In fact, he did not flap the wings and instead glided allowing him to remain silent. The wings were also razor sharp allowing him to use them to cut through webbing and attempts to entangle him. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #594)
From his mouth, he could spit out a corrosive acid that could eat through a mask and could blind his opponents if it went into their eyes. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #593)
