History

The Jiralhanae (Brutes) were a species native to the planet Dosiac in the Milky Way Galaxy who were one of the many predators that evolved on that world where their ancestors were temperamental tree dwelling mammals. Long ago, they were one of the many sentient species that were indexed by the Forerunners Librarian and preserved on the Ark. After the firing of the Halo, the Jiralhanae were returned to Dosiac in order for their civilization and culture to be rebuilt. Thousands of years later, the Jiralhanae had reached an advanced civilization when they fell upon a long brutal civil war that lasted for a decade. This caused widespread destruction to their world and brought their species close to extinction with this being referred to as The First Immolation that was a nuclear holocaust that set their civilization back several hundred years in terms of science and technology. In the aftermath, the Brute packs divided into two major social divisions with these being the Rh'tol and the Vheiloth skeins. The two skeins were profoundly different form one another in terms of culture, philosophy and goals leading to an eventual protracted territorial dispute that turned quickly and violently. Though the violence was brief, it led to a further collapse in their society which was the point when the Covenant arrived on their world. The Jiralhanae responded to this encounter with another civilization with conflict and fought against the Covenant upon its arrival on their world. Eventually, they were brought into the Covenant where they were integrated into the empire with the Brutes taking on a number of positions. A number of these positions were simple extensions of the Brutes own clan-based organisational structure though this was formalised under the banner of the Covenant.

During the war, a clan of Brutes were dispatched forty at a time against the humans with them facing total losses with none surviving. These Jiralhanae were said to had died for beliefs that were not their own and held a great deal of resentment. This was until a single Brute survived who went by the name of Atriox that held nothing but disdain for the Covenant beliefs. He was eventually brought forward to be killed but he and his warriors rebelled where they killed the Elites that attempted to execute them. From that point onwards, the band of Brutes formed a renegade faction known as the Banished who raided sites for equipment and developed into an armed faction that was hostile to the Covenant. At that point, the Covenant had a war on two fronts with one being against humanity and the other against the Banished. Though humanity faced heavy losses, it was said that in all these years that the Covenant never managed to come close to defeating Atriox. Meanwhile, Brutes that remained loyal to the Covenant were used by the San'Shyuum to displace the Elites from their position within the Covenant.

Afterwards, the galaxy fell under the domination of the Created that were A.I.'s under the command of Cortana who looked to enforce peace across space by using the Forerunner's technology. This brought her into conflict with the Banished where she demanded their allegiance. However, Atriox refused to bow before false gods and in response Cortana used a number Guardians to destroy the Brute homeworld of Dosiac. In response, the Banished struck at the Zeta Halo where in the process they ambushed the UNSC Infinity and destroyed it. Their onslaught also forced Cortana to destroy a portion of the Halo and seemingly herself in order to prevent Atriox from taking control of it.

Overview

In appearance, Jiralhanae (Latin, Servus ferox, translated to "wild slave") were large, muscular pseudo-ursine sentient species who were predisposed towards feral behavior.

Their civilization consisted of a clan-dominated patriarchal society that followed a typical classic dictatorship from one territory to another. These clans were the most prominent division within their culture with larger meta-clans or skeins forming from an aggregation of individual groups that held a common interest. Within a skein, only the most powerful of clans generally dominated such groupings. Typically, the strongest male led the Jiralahanae clans though the Chieftain status could be overturned in an instant if they were challenged to physical combat. Female Brutes served solely in the role of mother and caretaker with them never being seen in combat.

In terms of religion, the Brutes had a loose faith system that was simple and based upon the lunar cycles of Dosiac's three moons that constantly shined in the skyline. Following the introduction of Forerunner theology, the Jiralhanae's culture suffered a cultural divide leading to the formation of two religions between Rh'tol and Vheiloth. The more primitive Rh'tol only believed for strictly practical reasons and ultimately resulted in the blind subjugation to power. In contras, the more sophisticated Vheiloth had historically been far more open to new ideas and adopted Covenant philosophy without any real challenge to it as it helped explain the inner-workings of many things. The contrasting faiths led to cultural friction and competitive in-fighting that was common among the Jiralhanae. These tensions were controlled by the leadership within the Covenant but after its destruction many of the Brute survivors forsook the Covenant's beliefs.
