Modern

At some point, he had a son who was given the name Joe Chill Junior. Chill with his sister Marcia attempted to spring a trap on Batman by luring him into a confrontation. However, Chill's son was there at the time with him looking to bond with his child. Chill was later killed at the hands of the Reaper with his son becoming overwrought with grief. Joe Chill, Jr. then vowed to get revenge on Batman and took on the mantle of the Reaper. (Batman: Full Circle v1 #1)

The New 52

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

A Chill by the name of Daxton was a relative who kept his true identity a secret and had sworn away from using guns. (We Are Robin v1 #11)

  • Joe Chill was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane where he was initially an unnamed mugger in Detective Comics v1 #33 (November, 1939) with him being named as Joe Chill in Batman v1 #47 (June–July, 1948).

  • In Justice League Unlimited, Joe Chill appeared in the DC Animated Universe episode "For the Man Who Has Everything" where he was voiced by actor Kevin Conroy

Films

  • In Batman, Joe Chill was originally going to feature in the 1989 film but the script was changed with an alternate take on events. Instead, Joe Chill was replaced by the original character of Jack Napier who was responsible for killing Thomas and Martha Wayne. He told the young Bruce if he 'ever danced with the Devil in the pale moon light' but before he could kill the boy his partner urged him to flee before the police arrived. Napier in an accident became the Joker leading to a merger between the roles of Joe Chill and the Joker.
  • In Batman Begins, Joe Chill appeared in the live-action film that was part of The Dark Knight Trilogy where he was portrayed by actor Richard Brake.

Video games

  • In Batman: The Telltale Series, Joe Chill appeared in the video game where he was voiced by actor Jarion Monroe. He was a hired gun that was known to Carmine Falcone who had used him in the past. Hamilton Hill had secretly hired Chill to murder Thomas and Martha Wayne when they were walking in Crime Alley. Chill was later sent to prison where he was killed by some of the in-mates.
