Biography

Kaido, the King of Beasts in One Piece v1 #101.

Kaidou (Japanese: カイドウ, Hepburn: Kaidō) was a male human said to had been born on the Grand Line around 59 years ago. He resided in the Vodka Kingdom as a child, which invaded and looted other towns in order to be able to afford membership in the World Government and was considered its strongest soldier by the time he was 10 years old. Three years later, Kaidou started questioning this system and the king, not knowing what to do with him, decided to sell him off to the Marines in return for the right to attend the next Levely. However, Kaidou escaped from the battleship carrying him, and immediately received a bounty of 70,000,000 Beli. Kaidou allowed himself to be captured numerous times afterward for the purpose of eating the food on the battleships, escaping with ease once he had his fill.

Around 28 years ago, Kurozumi Higurashi approached Kaidou with an offer of territory to build weapons factories in Wano Country, which was known for its skilled craftsmen, allowing him to increase his might further. Kaidou agreed to this and began occupying Wano Country once Higurashi's relative Orochi had seized control of the shogunate; in exchange for the ability to grow his weapons enterprise, Kaidou served as a protector for Orochi. It was around this time that Kaidou had a son named Yamato, who was actually born as his daughter. It was 26 years ago when Scien finally accepted Kaidou's earlier invitation, and joined his crew under the name 'Queen'. Then 25 years ago, Kaidou confronted Kouzuki Oden at the shogun's castle after the latter attempted to kill Orochi. Kaidou and Orochi then made a deal with Oden: If Oden danced naked in the Flower Capital once a week, citizens would be spared; they also promised to leave Wano in five years. Afterwards, Kaidou flew over the shogun's castle in his dragon form. Around 23 years ago, Kaidou was noted to had fought with Gecko Moria in the Ringo region of Wano Country where he defeated his opponent. Though the exact details of the battle were unknown, Moria was said to had lost his entire crew and left warped as well as shattered from the experience with him holding a grudge against Kaidou. Twenty years ago, Oden and his nine retainers were on their way to Onigashima, Kaidou and his crew confronted them in the Udon region. In the ensuing battle, Oden managed to inflict Kaidou with a permanent wound on his torso, possibly the first he ever received. However, Kaidou knocked Oden unconscious when Oden was distracted by Higurashi who had impersonated a kidnapped Momonosuke. Sometime after the battle, Kaidou killed Higurashi for her interference. On the day of Oden's execution, Kaidou joined Orochi in witnessing the execution. Oden then made a deal with Kaidou to let those who survived the execution go free and Kaidou gave him an hour. Kaidou was amused to watch Oden as the latter endured standing in a pot of boiling oil while holding his retainers above his head with a board. Although Oden successfully survived one hour in the boiling pot, Kaidou and Orochi decided to execute Oden and his retainers regardless. As Oden's retainers fled, Kaidou apologized to him for Higurashi's interference before shooting Oden in the head.

When Whitebeard was on his way to save Ace from his execution at Marineford, Kaidou alongside King tried to attack him. However, Shanks intercepted Kaidou before he could reach Whitebeard. The nature of the battle was unknown though Shanks appeared unscathed by the time he arrived at Marineford.

Overview

Personality and attributes

He came to be known as Kaido, The King of the Beasts (百獣のカイドウ, Hyakujū no Kaidō, lit. "Kaido of the Beasts") where he developed a fearsome reputation as a pirate. His incredible resilience led to him being referred to as the Strongest Creature (最強の生物, Saikyō no Seibutsu). After his defeat, Kaidou came to be referred to in Wano's folklore where they spoke of him as Dragon King Kaidou (龍王カイドウ, Ryūō Kaidō?).

At some point, he had a daughter named Yamato (ヤマト, Yamato) who accompanied him to the Land of Wano. Yamato would identify themselves as Kaidou's son and in that time would develop an admiration for the legendary samurai Kouzuki Oden (光月おでん, Kōzuki Oden). After Oden's death, Yamato decided to become like him, impersonating him and adopting his mannerisms. As a result of this desire to emulate Oden, Yamato decided to become a man and identify as Kaidou's son, with his father and the Beasts Pirates referring to him as such as well. This path has put Yamato at odds with Kaidou, with much of his life being spent imprisoned on Onigashima.

Powers and abilities

Kaidou was legendary for his supreme physical power as the world's 'Strongest Creature'. With a one-handed swing of his kanabō, he can send normal-sized people flying into the distance. He once sunk nine enormous prison ships singlehandedly. Sengoku once said that even as a mere apprentice in the Rocks Pirates, Kaidou was able to earn the respect of his vicious companions through his strength alone.

Most remarkably, Kaidou's body is nigh-indestructible far more that his former crewmate and fellow Emperor Big Mom, and even attacks strengthened by ordinary Armament Haki cannot damage his incredibly tough defense.

This durability has given Kaidou the reputation of being unable to die. He was caught and tortured 18 times, and organizations as powerful as the Marines, and other Emperors have attempted to execute him 40 times, only to fail as Kaidou survived every single attempt because every execution weapon broke when used on him. Most notably, Kaidou jumped 10,000 meters from a Sky Island onto the ground, creating a massive crater and shockwave strong enough to sink a large ship nearby, and emerged with only a small headache; it has even become a hobby for him to attempt suicide, only for it to fail. Kaidou also clashed with Big Mom continuously for one to three days and emerged without any injuries or signs of fatigue, showing incredible stamina.

During the God Valley Incident, Big Mom was noted to had stolen the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu (ウオウオの実 モデル "青龍", Uo Uo no Mi Moderu "Seiryū") that was a Mythical Zoan (「動物ゾオン系」幻獣種, Zōn-kei Genjūshu?, literally meaning "Animal System Mythical Beast Species") type of Devil Fruit (悪魔の実, Akuma no Mi) and gave it to Kaidou. After consuming it, Kaidou gained the ability to transform into a hybrid and full serpentine Azure Dragon at will. It was said to belong to the strongest class of Devil Fruit and had once been a World Noble treasure before its theft. His full Beast Form is massive, roughly half the size of a small town, and was covered with extremely durable, blue scales, dramatically increasing the tremendous natural durability of Kaidou's body.

Among the techniques known to him included:

As a young pirate, he came to join the crew of the Rocks Pirates (ロックス海賊団, Rokkusu Kaizokudan) following an invitation from Edward Newgate. He served as an apprentice pirate (海賊見習い, Kaizoku Minarai) where he served them for many years until the group was disbanded. He would later become the head of his own pirate crew that were the Beasts Pirates. (百獣海賊団, Hyakujū Kaizokudan) Thus, he came to serve as the Supreme Commander (総督, Sōtoku, Governor-General) of the Animal Kingdom Pirates. His power grew to such heights that he stood as a member of the Four Emperors (四皇, Yonkō) that were held as being one of the Three Great Powers (三大勢力, San Dai Seiryoku) in the world.
