Biography
Origin
Karolina Dean was seemingly a female human who was born the daughter of Frank Dean and Leslie Dean. (Runaways v1 #1)
She accompanied her friends to what they thought was a normal charity meeting, but she witnessed her parents and the others sacrifice a young girl in a ritual to their Gibborim masters. During the chaos of this revelation, Karolina was stunned and overwhelmed, but she joined her friends in retreating from their homes, realizing that her life of privilege was built upon something horrific. (Runaways v1 #1)
While on the run with her friends, Karolina discovered the truth of her alien heritage. When cornered during an argument, she reluctantly pulled off the medical alert bracelet her parents had always forced her to wear. As soon as the bracelet was removed, her body flared with brilliant solar energy, her skin radiating light and rainbow hues, revealing her true Majesdanian physiology. This moment shocked the group but also gave them a powerful ally, as Karolina’s ability to project and manipulate solar energy quickly became vital for their survival. (Runaways v1 #3)
Karolina took on an active combat role during the group’s direct confrontation with the Pride. She flew into battle and unleashed powerful bursts of solar energy against her parents and their allies, illuminating the battlefield and shielding her friends from counterattacks. Despite her gentle nature, she fought with determination, using her powers to protect the other Runaways while resisting her parents’ attempts to sway her back to their side. She endured emotional conflict throughout the battle but stood firm against them, proving her loyalty to her friends over her family. (Runaways v1 #7)
Runaways
Karolina misread some signs and unsuccessfully tried to kiss her friend Nico. Her love life became more complicated with the arrival of Super-Skrull-in-training Prince Xavin, her fiancée through an arranged marriage. (Runaways v2 #7) After fighting Karolina's friends, Xavin told her that they would not force her to marry them, but they had hoped that their marriage might end the war between the Skrulls and the Majesdanians. Karolina revealed that she was not attracted to men and did not want to live a lie, so Xavin altered their form to that of a human woman and persuaded her to leave with them. Karolina returned to her parents' home planet with Xavin, hoping to stop the war, which was triggered by her parents. Dean thus decided to leave with Xavin, much to Minoru's distress. She gave her medical alert bracelet to Nico as a gift and remained in contact with her friends via voice transmissions. (Runaways v2 #8)
On her home planet Majesdane, Karolina Dean learns to control her Majesdanian and humanoid forms and how to further control her solar powers. (Runaways v2 #16) Though Karolina and Xavin grew close, Karolina continued to miss her friends. Karolina and Xavin prepared for their wedding. (Runaways v2 #14) Unfortunately, during the ceremony, a guest from Skrullos insulted a Majesdanian bridesmaid's dresses leading to more fighting. However, her wedding is disrupted, and she and Xavin flee to Earth as their homeworlds reignite their war. They crash land near the Hostel and help rescue Molly Hayes. (Runaways v2 #17)
Disbanded
Once the wedding and talks of peace failed, a Skrull Battleship launched to thermonutron missiles at Majesdane destroying it. (Runaways v3 #9)
Karolina was among the numerous extraterrestrials abducted Henry Gyrich's mandate to S.W.O.R.D.. (S.W.O.R.D. v1 #2) She was briefly held in custody of S.W.O.R.D. abroad the Peak. (S.W.O.R.D. v1 #3)
When Chase started to sense that Old Lace was still alive, the Runaways followed the trail straight to the Avengers Academy campus. When Justin Seyfert detected the Ultron tech within Victor, the Runaways were attacked. The fighting ceased and they made an effort to recover Old Lace. Much to the Runaways' joy, they found Old Lace alive and well. They then came into conflict with the Academy again as their plans to force Klara and Molly to stay were revealed. (Avengers Academy v1 #27) They soon stopped fighting again, and Nico used a spell to share their memories. This lead to a mutual understanding and their differences were peacefully resolved. Karolina made plans to go on a date with Julie Power. (Avengers Academy v1 #28)
Reunited
After the Runaways disbanded, Karolina Dean moved on to a happy college life, overcoming her past anxieties with therapy. When Gert Yorkes returned to life, she rallied Nico and Chase to reform the Runaways. When they visited Karolina, she initially declined the offer feeling she had grown and changed. She reasoned they were never a real team like the Avengers and had no mission beyond survival with Minoru agreeing but also feeling guilty. (Runaways v5 #3) Dean visited Minoru's apartment to reconsider, but rejected Minoru's kiss, attributing it to stress and her own relationship. Karolina eventually gave the offer a second thought and returned to the team in time to help them save Molly from her mad scientist grandmother. (Runaways v5 #5) The Runaways eventually reunited to rescue Yorkes and Hayes from Hayes' grandmother. Dean avoided harm but intervened when Minoru was attacked. They returned home, battered but finding solace as a makeshift family. (Runaways v5 #6) Karolina moved to The Hostel's main underground building with the rest of the Runaways, but continued attending college. Karolina Dean fit back in seamlessly but struggled to balance her classes and relationship with Julie Power. (Runaways v5 #7) When Doctor Doom attacked during Power's visit, their differing views on the Runaways' methods caused tension. (Runaways v5 #8) Power was frustrated by Dean's reluctance to open up about her past. To drown her sorrows in sugar over Dean ignoring her once again, Power accidentally ate an enchanted cupcake, turning her into a thirteen-year-old. (Runaways v5 #9) The Runaways reversed the spell, but Power broke up with Dean, feeling secondary to the team. (Runaways v5 #10)
Dean admitted to neglecting Power, making the breakup inevitable. (Runaways v5 #11) Not long afterwards, Nico decided to act on her feelings for Karolina, and they started dating. (Runaways v5 #12)
Karolina became more aimless and anxious as time went on, until she powered up to save a young girl from being run over. (Runaways v5 #21)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Karolina Dean was depicted as a tall, blonde teenager with long hair and a striking California-sunshine aesthetic when in her human form. Her defining feature emerged when she shed her inhibitor bracelet: her entire body glowed with radiant light, refracting into rainbow colors across her skin and hair, making her appear almost ethereal. She often wore casual clothes that reflected her laid-back personality, such as tank tops and skirts, but when transformed, her glowing form made her instantly stand out as something otherworldly. (Runaways v1 #3) Initially, she decided to take the name of Lucy in the Sky as her superpowered identity. (Runaways v1 #6)
Karolina was portrayed as compassionate, idealistic, and often conflicted. She carried a gentle and non-confrontational demeanor, preferring peace over violence, but when forced into combat, she stood by her friends with unwavering loyalty. Her struggles with identity, stemming from her alien heritage and her sexual orientation, created internal tension, but they also defined her as one of the more empathetic and emotionally open members of the Runaways. She was often a calming influence within the team, balancing out the more volatile personalities around her. (Runaways v1 #1)
She was noted for being a vegan. (Runaways v1 #1)
Karolina once wanted to be an actress like her mother. (Runaways v1 #15)
It was shown that her father was a fan of the actor James Dean, and this was likely why her parents chose the surname 'Dean' after arriving on Earth. (Runaways v1 #18)
Karolina was still able to legally claim royalties from her parents movies. (Runaways v5 #7)
She showed some interest in Lightspeed aka Julie Powers when the Runaways met Excelsior. (Runaways v2 #3)
Powers and abilities
In powers, Karolina Dean possessed the physiology of a Majesdanian, a race of aliens who absorbed and channeled solar energy. Once freed from her inhibitor bracelet, she was able to project this energy as concussive blasts of light, create radiant shields, and surround herself with destructive solar force. She could also fly, her body propelled by the solar energy coursing through her. Her glowing rainbow form made her both a visually striking presence and a formidable combatant, though her reliance on solar energy meant she was weaker without exposure to sunlight. (Runaways v1 #3)
S.W.O.R.D. files indicated that her extranormal ability was solar energy manipulation. (S.W.O.R.D. v1 #2) Karolina can manipulate and project solar energy in a beam of variable intensity and diameter, from a wide concussive blast to a thin laser-like cutting beam. (Runaways v1 #4)
This vibrant appearance can be suppressed to appear human through training or through exposure to specific types of metal. (Runaways v1 #3) Originally, Karolina was unable to control this vibrant appearance and required her medical alert bracelet to suppress this ability. (Runaways v1 #5) However, after spending many months on Majesdane, she learned to control the change and can now transform at will. (Runaways v2 #16) With practice, Karolina was able to appear human without her bracelet. (Runaways v3 #6)
During an encounter with the vampire Topher, it was revealed that her blood contains solar energy properties, causing Topher to combust after drinking it. Her mom was shown to be able to control and shape her energy blasts after they left her body, and Dean seems to be starting to be able to do the same thing, able to make forcefields and harmlessly pick people up with her energy. (Runaways v3 #9)
She was a founding member of the Runaways when she and the group came to learn the truth about their parents. (Runaways v1 #3)
