Biography
Kei Kurono (Japanese: 玄野 計, Hepburn: Kurono Kei)
In the sterile, fluorescent-lit environment of a Tokyo subway station, the self-absorbed high school student Kei Kurono spent his final moments of normal life attempting to ignore a homeless man who had fallen onto the tracks. His apathy was shattered when his estranged childhood friend, Masaru Kato, leapt down to help and pressured Kei into assisting him. After the two successfully moved the man to safety, they were unable to climb back onto the platform in time and were decapitated by an express train. However, instead of ceasing to exist, Kei manifested in a mysterious apartment where he encountered a group of strangers and a silent black sphere known as Gantz. Confused and agitated, he followed the sphere's command to 'kill' and donned a custom-fitted fortified suit found in a designated briefcase. He was then forcibly teleported to a residential suburb, where he stood frozen in fear as he and the group cornered a small, green Onion Alien. While the others mocked the creature, Kei remained on high alert, his survival instincts surfacing just as the situation turned lethal. As the suburban street transformed into a slaughterhouse, Kei Kurono watched in paralyzed horror as the massive, vengeful Onion Alien father emerged and effortlessly disemboweled the veteran hunters who had underestimated the threat. Amidst the carnage, Kei’s cowardice was momentarily eclipsed by a desperate need to protect Kei Kishimoto, leading him to accidentally discover the Gantz suit's capabilities when he instinctively leapt an impossible distance to safety. When the creature finally cornered him, Kei's adrenaline-fueled survival reflex took over; he engaged the monster in a frantic physical struggle, discovering that the suit granted him the strength to strike with bone-shattering force. Despite his lack of formal training, he managed to grapple with the alien, eventually utilizing the X-Gun's delayed explosive blast to neutralize the creature just as the mission's time limit expired. The battle concluded with Kei being pulled back into the ether, leaving him to materialize once more in the black sphere's room as a survivor, though his mind remained fractured by the visceral trauma of the hunt and the unsettling realization that his life was no longer his own.
