Biography

Killua Zoldyck (Japanese: キルア=ゾルディック, Hepburn: Kirua Zorudikku) was a male human born as the son of Silva Zoldyck (シルバ゠ゾルディック, Shiruba Zorudikku) and Kikyo Zoldyck (キキョウ゠ゾルディック, Kikyō Zorudikku) of the renowned [[Zoldyck Family] that were a clan of assassins. A middle child of the family, he showed great promise from birth where from a tender age he came to master many killing techniques making him one of the best assassins the Zoldycks had ever produced. His training was overseen by his father Silva and his brother Illumi Zoldyck the latter of which at some point imparted a compulsion that made Killua seek to run away in the face of stronger opponents. When he was 3 years old, he started training in tailing that routinely put his life at risk. He was also close to his sibling Alluka Zoldyck who had been possessed by wish-granting creature named Nanika that came from the Dark Continent. Though able to grant wishes, a person had to grant 3 of Alluka's requests which Killua had done at one point in the past where he asked how to revert Nanika's change to the Zoldyck sibling. He kept the secret to himself from his parents who unknown to Killua had been informed by the family servant Mitsuba after she witnessed it. When Killua was 6 years old, he was forced by his father to participate in the martial arts tournament held at Heavens Arena (天てん空くう闘とう技ぎ場じょう, Tenkū Tōgijō) where he reached the 200th floor after which he was allowed to return home. During that time, it took him 2 months to reach the 150th floor and a total of 2 years to get to the 200th floor.

Bored and tired of killing, Killua unexpectedly rebelled against his family, injuring both his mother and brother, and ran away to join the Hunter exam. He met Gon during the first portion of the Hunter Exam and became great friends. He wants to be neither an assassin nor a Hunter. He just wants to be Gon's friend. Killua divulges that ever since his birth, he has been in constant training for the occupation of a professional assassin. Killua had spent years trying to perfect unique skills that assassins portray and possess. He is forced to battle in the Heavens Arena fighting tournament at the age of 6, which he took two years to get to the 190th floor.

He came to be one of the few rookies who make it to Zaban Tunnel. He meets Tonpa, and accepts the drink offered to him, despite suspecting the drink contained some chemicals. He later asks for four more cans, baffling Tonpa, but Killua reveals to him that he has built a resistance against poisons and would not be killed by them. Satotz then arrives to announce the start of the 287th Hunter Exam, in which the applicants would have to follow him to the next examination site. Killua uses his skateboard and passes by Gon Freecss, Kurapika, and Leorio Paradinight. Leorio berates him for using a skateboard in an endurance test, but Gon points out that Satotz only told them to follow him. Killua asks Gon's age and finds out both of them are almost 12 years old. He decides to run alongside the group and asks for Leorio's age, calling him 'pops'. Insulted, Leorio reveals he is not even 20 yet, to the two boys' shock. 60 kilometers later, Leorio becomes extremely exhausted. Killua is convinced that he is dropping out and tells Gon to leave him behind. Leorio finds the motivation to continue running and Gon picks up Leorio's suitcase with his fishing pole. An impressed Killua wants to try it, while Gon wants to try his skateboard. Halfway up the stairs, Gon and Killua reach the front of the group, with Killua claiming the reason is the slow pace. Gon enquires why Killua wants to be a Hunter. Killua answers that he doesn't, only that he is interested in taking the exam because it has been described as really tough, although for the time being, he finds it tedious and boring. He returns the question to Gon, who explains that his father is a Hunter and that he wants to follow in his footsteps. Laughing, Killua comments he is weird for not knowing how he is. Moments later, the applicants emerge in the wetlands. After the failed attempt of two Man-faced Apes to trick them, Satotz leads the applicants across the Milsy Wetlands and warns them not to fall to the numerous wild animals living in the swamp. Killua invites Gon to get in the front of the group, as he thinks it would get them away from Hisoka Morow, who would use the fog as cover to kill someone. He explains that he could feel it because he is like him. When the applicants behind them start falling prey to the endemic flora and fauna, Killua warns Gon to remain focused on the runners in front of him, as it would be easy to fall into the animals' traps if they are separated. When he hears Leorio scream, however, Gon rushes to him against Killua's advice, leaving him to continue the run alone.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Killua Zoldyck was a young male with very pale skin, blue eyes and spiky silver hair. His eyes changed shape depending on his mood with them narrowing and sharpening when he entered in assassination mode. His harsh youth meant that he was fairly lean at first due to constant physical conditioning and torture training.

From the outside, Killua seems just to be the rich boy; cheeky, cheerful, has a sweet tooth, and full of mischievous ideas. However, his ruthlessness and aptitude in killing shows the other side of him-- deadly, violent and bloodthirsty. Though younger than Gon, he acts more mature than him. But turns out Gon is more mature than him in a love-relationship experience.

Having been repeatedly tortured since birth, Killua had been conditioned to possess extreme tolerance for poison, electricity and pain. He possesses extraordinary agility and strength that makes Killua a one man killing machine-- not one to be trifled with, as many of his adversaries had witnessed.

He had said that he had grown tired of killing and instead wanted to simply be a kid and spend time with his friend Gon Freecs.

However, until recently, his greatest flaw was to fear those who are more powerful than him, one of whom is his elder brother, Illumi. Killua had been trained as an assassin by his brother to be extremely cautious that he only engages in combat provided that victory is absolutely certain. This impeded him as a Hunter, as [Biscuit Krueger stated more than once that victory is never certain, and that depending on the circumstances, a person has the potential to defeat a stronger opponent.

Killua struggled with these conflicting ideas during the latter half of the series, as he started to encounter stronger opponents. However, his brother's teachings remained firmly entrenched in his mind, to the point that Biscuit prophesied that he would one day abandon Gon because of this. Biscuit gave Killua an ultimatum: Defeat Shoot to claim the right to go with Gon and fight the Chimera Ants. Killua lost, and resolved to leave after Gon had recovered from his fight, protecting him in the meantime.

Finally he had to face Biscuit's prophecy when he encountered a Chimera ant while Gon (who couldn't use nen at the time) wasn't far off and had no way to defend himself. Killua made an attempt to save Gon. While fighting with the Chimera Ant, Killua is also battling his inner-self. Preoccupied, Killua is losing to the chimera ant. At the last moment, Killua realized that Illumi had implanted a needle in his brain way back in the first Hunter Exam. This needle was responsible for forcing Killua to retreat and jailed himself on his comfort zone whenever any situation would potentially endanger his life. Upon extracting the needle, Killua was freed from this restraint and gained full control of his subconscious to make his own decision whether or not to flee whenever there is a need to fight stronger opponents.

Powers and abilities

Killua Zoldyck was a human though one who showed much potential from birth to be an elite assassin. Since youth, he went through extensive training to become one of the best assassins in the world.

In the first part of the series, Killua does not employ or use any weapons in combat. Instead, he relies on several assassination arts passed down to him through his family. These include adjusting his fingernails into claws and the Echo--a motion that creates an afterimage of the body through a varying cadence of steps.

During the Greed Island story arc, Killua begins using yo-yos made of a special metal alloy in combat. The yo-yos are extremely durable and heavy, weighing 50 kilograms each. They can be used in conjunction with Killua's Hatsu as well. Killua is reluctant to use the yo-yos in combat thus using only his raw physical abilities in order for his opponent to know as little about his combat abilities as possible.

As a Transmuter, Killua's most efficient in changing the composition of his aura into electricity. This feat was both inspired and made possible through years of electric shock torture he received as a child for resistance training from his Milluki.

  • Lightning Palm (雷掌 Izutsushi) : The first and most basic ability Killua developed. As the name suggests, Killua is able to shock an opponent by touching them.
  • Thunderbolt (落雷 Narukami) : A natural evolution of his Lightning Palm ability, Killua able to transmute his aura into a bolt of lightning. The Japanese name of the ability, Narukami, comes from the famous Kabuki play, Narukami Fudô Kitayama Zakura, in which the character Narukami transforms into a thunder god at the end of the fourth act.
  • Godspeed (神速 Kanmuru) : Developed by Killua during his fight against the Ortho Siblings, Godspeed allows him to react and move his body at speeds that would normally be impossible. This ability changes Killua's aura into a field capable of transmitting all electrical impulses from the brain in a straight line directly to the part of the body he wants to use, completely bypassing his nervous system. It is made up of two parts: Denkō Sekka, the ability to move his body according to his own will, and Shippū Jinrai, the ability to sense his opponents movements and have his body react automatically.
