Kiroptus
Kiroptus was a a servant of the Dark Dweller, a large, winged beast who resembled a gargoyle with four wings (but oddly, no hands). He was sent by the Dark Dweller to scatter the Thirteen Treasures of Rule across Mer during the Year of the Black Tide, so that nothing could stop the Dark Water from completely enveloping the planet. He succeeded, but then Primus began using the compass to track the trasures down, and so Kiroptus attempted to stop him.
Primus lured Kiroptus to Banjamaar, the home of the Bell of the First Sound, knowing that only the bell had enough power to imprison Kiroptus' evil. Using the compass as bait, Primus succeeded. 17 years later Kiroptus used his telepathic abilities to appear to Ren in the form of Primus, telling his "son" that by ringing the Bell of the First Sound he could dispell all of the Dark Water from Mer.
His plan worked, and Ren rang the bell, which freed Kiroptus. Immediately Kiroptus stole the compass, but could not leave Banjamaar due to it's barrier of Sound Stones. Meanwhile, realizing that Kiroptus could not be so easily tricked into trapping himself in the bell a second time, Ren and Kangent built a fake bell and concealed the real one. Thus, when Ren stole the compass back from Kiroptus, the monster avoided the false bell and unwittingly became trapped in the real one once more.
Video Games
In the Pirates of Dark Water SNES game, Kiroptus is faced by Ren and his crew on Banjamaar, as in the series, in the room with the Bell of the First Sound. Unlike his TV series counterpart however, this Kiroptus had the ability to breathe fire.
