Biography
Kong Kenan was a male Chinese human born in the modern age as the son of Kong Zhongdan. (New Super-Man v1 #1)
They were then approached by the first American-style Chinese supervillain known as the Blue Condor. Rather than run away, reacted unexpectedly by throwing a tin can at his target's head. Blue Condor decided to leave the scene instead of continuing the fight with this incident witnessed by many bystanders. This saw Kong being hailed a hero by the people and him becoming a celebrity on the news. One of those approaching him was a reporter named Laney Lan with Kong taking an interest in her. (New Super-Man v1 #1)
He then visited his mother's grave where he was approached by Dr. Omen of the Ministry of Self-Reliance. She had come to recruit him to take part in an experiment to give him the powers of Superman. Travelling to Oriental Pearl Tower, he was given a containment suit as he entered into the origin chamber that was to give him his abilities. (New Super-Man v1 #1)
A Chinese journalist working to discover the secret identity of the American Superman mysteriously died, apparently as a result of a sudden and unexplained increase in the temperature of a localised area of his brain. Bat-Man suspected that he had been murdered by Kryptonian heat vision and asked Kenan to go to America and investigate the Superman Family. Kenan moved to Metropolis and worked on many missions with the Super-Family, eventually coming to realise that they could not be responsible for the journalist's death. The Super-Family eventually invited him to join the team officially but the Super-Twins objected, having learned he was spying on them. Kenan admitted the truth and why he had come to America, but also that he no longer believed they had murdered the reporter. He asked them to simply tell him their secret identities so he could tell Bat-Man they checked out, but they refused. Kenan had his robot assistant Robinpod scan the Super-Twins and matched the mud on their boots to the Kent Farm. He deduced that Superman was Clark Kent and suddenly suffered a massive brain aneurysm (Action Comics v1 #1058) Kenan's soul passed on to The In-Between, but Master I-Ching met him at the threshold of the afterlife and taught him to use his qi to come back from the dead. When he revived the Superman Family explained that Lex Luthor had put a psychic bomb in the minds of everyone on Earth that would kill them if they learned Superman's secret identity, which is why they had refused to tell him. Now that he knew the truth and had survived, they were happy to tell him anything he wanted to know, but suddenly Bat-Man burst in and attacked the Super-Family, as Kenan's vital signs had suddenly stopped and he thought they had murdered Kenan. Kenan tried to stop the fight but Robinpod told Kenan that if he explained what had happened to Bat-Man, he would inevitably deduce that Clark Kent was Superman and die. The only way to save his friend was to fake a defection from the Justice League of China to America and the Super-Family, which he reluctantly did. (Action Comics v1 #1059)
