Biography

Kono

She made her first appearance as part of the post–Five Year Gap continuity, where she replaced the fallen Legionnaire Blok and brought a more rebellious and unpredictable energy to the team. Kono grew up among the Sklarian Raiders, a matriarchal society of smugglers and pirates notorious for stealing advanced technology from the United Planets. Her early years were spent learning deception, combat, and interstellar thievery, though she often clashed with her people’s criminal lifestyle. When she manifested her metahuman powers—causing uncontrollable destruction whenever she lost her temper—she was exiled by the Sklarians for fear of her volatility. Her exile led her into contact with the Legion, who offered her purpose and camaraderie she had never known. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #21)

Upon joining the Legion, Kono served as both comic relief and heavy hitter, her unpredictable powers making her as much a danger to her foes as to her allies. Despite her brash and irreverent nature, she proved a valuable member of the team, helping to repel alien invasions and quell uprisings across the United Planets. She developed close friendships with Ultra Boy and Inferno, often teasing them but showing genuine loyalty in battle. Her outsider perspective provided a sharp contrast to the more idealistic Legionnaires, as she frequently questioned the moral and political motives behind the team’s actions. Though not officially deputized at first, her effectiveness on missions and growing sense of responsibility earned her full Legionnaire status, marking her transformation from a rogue into a recognized hero. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #23)

During her tenure, Kono became entangled in several major conflicts, including confrontations with Dominators, Khunds, and the growing influence of the Dark Circle. She participated in covert operations across multiple worlds, often relying on her powers to infiltrate enemy strongholds or disrupt battlefronts. Her irreverence for authority frequently clashed with more disciplined members such as Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy, but her results were undeniable. Kono’s brash attitude masked deeper insecurities stemming from her exile and her fear of losing control of her powers. Despite her tendency to act impulsively, she demonstrated remarkable courage and loyalty when her friends were in danger, standing firm in defense of the Legion’s ideals even when she disagreed with their methods. Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Kono was a young woman with pale lavender skin, short silver-white hair, and sharp, angular facial features that reflected her alien heritage. Her eyes were large and expressive, often glowing faintly when she used her powers. She typically wore a black and purple armored bodysuit with metallic accents, a design both practical and symbolic of her dual identity as a raider and a Legionnaire. Her costume was lighter and more form-fitting than traditional battle armor, allowing for agile movement during fights or infiltration missions. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #23)

Kono’s personality was marked by irreverence, humor, and defiance. She frequently used sarcasm and bravado to hide her deeper fears and insecurities, often mocking her enemies and even her teammates in moments of high tension. Beneath her rebellious exterior, she was fiercely loyal and protective, particularly toward those she considered family. Kono’s moral code was shaped by her rough upbringing—she distrusted authority and institutions but held strong personal convictions about fairness and freedom. Her relationships with other Legionnaires softened her cynicism over time, helping her grow into a more mature and self-aware individual without losing her fiery spirit. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #31)

Powers and abilities

Kono’s powers originated from a unique molecular density-shifting ability that allowed her to alter her physical composition, rendering herself intangible or super-dense at will. This enabled her to phase through solid matter, become invulnerable to most forms of attack, and manipulate the density of objects or enemies, crushing or destabilizing them with immense force. When enraged or overwhelmed, her power could spiral out of control, triggering destructive bursts capable of demolishing starships or entire structures. Her strength and durability in dense form rivaled those of Kryptonians under a yellow sun, while her intangibility made her nearly impossible to restrain. These abilities made Kono both an invaluable powerhouse and an unpredictable wild card within the Legion. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #21)
