History

Krat

Long ago, we were but a humble seaside fishing hamlet, known for our poverty and our devotion to the One-Winged Angel whose legend inspired the construction of the St. Frangelico Cathedral. Our quiet existence changed forever thirty years ago when the Order of Alchemists, led by Valentinus Monad, arrived in search of immortality and discovered a massive cavern beneath our feet known as the Relic of Trismegistus. Within these depths, they found Ergo, a miraculous blue mineral that served as a near-infinite energy source, though we did not yet know it was the crystallized essence of human souls. This discovery birthed a golden age of rapid industrialisation as figures like Giuseppe Geppetto and the industrialist Lorenzini Venigni harnessed Ergo to create the first automated puppets. Within just two decades, our modest village was completely transformed into a thriving Belle Époque metropolis, a "city of marvels" where puppets replaced human labor for every menial task. We lived in unprecedented luxury, shielded by the Grand Covenant which bound the puppets to never harm us, even as the Alchemists and Industrialists fought a bitter rivalry for control. Yet, this era of progress held a hidden rot, for the very Ergo that fueled our rise eventually triggered the Petrification Disease, a plague that would one day turn our beautiful streets into a graveyard.

Overview

In appearance, Krat was a highly developed Belle Époque coastal metropolis that served as a pinnacle of 19th-century industrial advancement. It was situated on the northern edge of a vast landmass, isolated from the rest of the world by a formidable range of mountains and the jagged cliffs of the Black Seaside. Our city was a vertical marvel built directly into the steep seaside terrain, featuring unique landscape traits such as the massive Barren Swamp and the deep, winding Relic of Trismegistus cavern system hidden beneath our foundations. From our highest vantage points, like the spires of the St. Frangelico Cathedral, we could see a complex network of interconnecting bridges, including the great Alchemist Bridge, which linked our sprawling districts across deep ravines. Our development was so vast that we hosted a Grand Exhibition to display our cultural and technological superiority, boasting an intricate tram system that moved passengers through opulent streets like Elysion Boulevard and past the towering Venigni Works. This geographic isolation allowed us to function as a sovereign city-state, a jewel of iron and stone that seemed untouched by the outside world until the very end.
