Biography

Le Chiffre (French: [lə ʃifʁ], "The Cypher" or "The Number")

He was seen in 1945 as a inmate of the Dachau DP camp in the US Zone of Germany. Then in January 1946 he became the paymaster of the "Syndicat des Ouvriers d'Alsace" (SODA) (English: Union of Workers of Alsace), a SMERSH controlled trade union. He made a major investment in a string of brothels with money belonging to SMERSH. Three months later on April 13 the investment went bad after French Law No. 46685 known as Loi Tendant a la Fermeture des Maisons de Tolerance et au Renforcement de Tolerance et au Renforcement de la Lutte contre le Proxenitisme was passed, which made brothels and pornographic material illegal. In an attempt to recover his money, he went to the casino in Royale-les-Eaux in an attempt to recover all of his lost funds. There, he hosted a big Chemin de Fer game (in which he was the banker) in order to obtain fifty million francs. During the game, Le Chiffre was prevented from obtaining this goal by James Bond. At first, Le Chiffre managed to completely clean Bond out. However, Felix Leiter gave thirty-two million francs to Bond and the British agent subsequently cleaned out Le Chiffre. After the game, he kidnapped Vesper Lynd and disabled Bond's Bentley with tire spikes. Le Chiffre subsequently took Bond to a building and tortured him with a carpet beater and coffee for the location of the money he won. When it became apparent that Bond would not talk, he was about to castrate him when a SMERSH agent quickly executed him for failing to recover the funds.

Films

  • In Casino Royale, Le Chiffre appeared in the setting of the 2006 live-action film adaptation where he was portrayed by actor Mads Mikkelsen. Believed by MI6 to have been born on November 16, 1970 in Albania, Le Chiffre is banker to the world's terrorist organizations. A mathematical genius and chess prodigy, his abilities enable him to earn large sums of money in games of chance and probability. Consequently, Le Chiffre has a penchant for poker, even though he has what at first appears to be an obvious tell — it is later implied that this is a trick to fool James Bond into becoming overconfident. He suffers from haemolacria, which causes him to weep blood out of his left eye, and uses a platinum-plated benzedrine inhaler. He was suspected of being involved in the funding of the September 11th attacks, as well as profiting from it. In 2006, Le Chiffre is contacted by Mr. White, a representative of a mysterious terrorist organization later revealed to be Quantum, who introduces him to Steven Obanno, a feared leader of the Lord's Resistance Army in Mbale, Uganda, and arranges to bank several briefcases full of cash for Obanno. Even as the money is being loaded into his convoy, Le Chiffre contacts his banker and orders him to short a million Skyfleet shares from the money he has just received. Although the man discourages him, Le Chiffre insists that he intends to make an extreme profit out of his efforts: in fact, he has invested his money in such a way that he would make an extreme profit in the event of the company's failure to sell short and hires it the middleman Alex Dimitrios, who mediates him to a terrorist. This hires Le Chiffre to destroy the prototype of Skyfleet's new aircraft on release in Miami International Airport.
