Biography

Legato Bluesummers (Japanese: レガート・ブルーサマーズ, Hepburn: Regāto Burūsamāzu)

Legato was a nameless sex-slave. While imprisoned, he slowly developed his power by weaving metal threads into his brain, allowing him to take control of other bodies. Before he could fully develop his power, he was discovered, wounded, and raped. However, Knives happened to pass by and destroy the city, with Legato being the only survivor thanks to the power of his threads. Legato immediately becomes infatuated with Knives and swears eternal loyalty, showing his willingness to allow Knives to kill him. Knives presumably gives him the last name "Bluesummers". Later, Legato and Dr. Conrad found July in ruins and Knives heavily wounded. Legato sees Vash in the distance and realizes Vash is the cause of Knives' serious injury, but Conrad convinces Legato to help tend to the wounded Knives instead of chasing after Vash. Seeing Knives in such a state traumatizes Legato, who swears revenge on Vash, eventually leading Legato to plan a killing game to torment and eventually kill Vash. Claiming to be a messenger, he introduced Vash to his proposed killing game. He warns that Vash will be pursued by "demons" who are intent on killing him. Legato leaves Vash a Coin Case, telling Vash that each of these assassins will be carrying a coin. He tells Vash that once he has collected all of the coins something will happen. When Vash asks his name and how he knows these things, Legato formally introduces himself and then hints that Knives sent him. Legato later watches the battle between Vash and the first two members of the Gung-Ho-Guns, Monev the Gale and E.G. Mine. Upon defeating Mine, Vash challenges Legato, stating that he intends to reverse their roles of hunter and hunted in Legato's twisted coin game.

At first, Legato as Knives servant appeared as a messenger introducing Vash to his proposed killing game. He warns that could kill the entire town he's in if he wanted to, and that Vash will be pursued by twelve vicious assassins who are intent on killing him. Legato leaves Vash a Coin Case, with twelve half coins, telling Vash that each of these assassins will be carrying another half. He tells Vash that once he has collected all of the coins something interesting will happen. Chaos ensues in the town, as a woman finds her husband decapitated. His head is in a paper bag, from which Legato previously took a sandwich. Legato goes to Monev the Gale, gives him a half coin and instructs him to kill Vash, whatever it takes. After Monev fails to kill Vash, Legato kills him by nailing him to a cross. Legato later watches the battle between Vash and E.G. Mine. Upon defeating E.G. Mine, Vash challenges Legato, stating that now the roles are reversed, that Vash is now hunting legato. Legato first demonstrated his ability to control the bodies of others in a cafe at Jeneora Rock. He's eating a dessert when a group of slave traders, the Roderick Gang, walk in with some girls, and start assaulting the girls for paying attention to Legato, calling him "sickeningly pretty." After being threatened, Legato makes one of the men rip his own heart out, and the rest of them shoot and kill each other. Walking out of the cafe, he urges the girls to make good use of the limited time they have left, informing them that 'the end is quite near'. Surprised by his own actions by spending his time with vermin, he stares at his left hand and calls Vash a 'never-ending irritation'. The following day, Legato meets more members of the Roderick Gang, and instructs Midvalley the Hornfreak to kill half of them. He does, and introduces the rest of the Gung-Ho-Guns: Gray the Ninelives, Zazie the Beast, Hoppered the Gauntlet, Dominique the Cyclops, Leonoff the Puppet-master and Rai-Dei the Blade. Legato notes that Chapel is missing, however he meets Wolfwood the Punisher shortly after and assumes he must be Chapel.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Legato Bluesummers was a tall, gaunt male figure with pallid skin, sunken eyes, and a somber, almost lifeless expression that belied the cruel force within. His face was long and narrow, accentuated by a sharp nose and thin lips that curled only rarely—either in smug satisfaction or sadistic amusement. His deep blue hair fell straight and long, framing his face like a curtain and trailing past his shoulders in neat strands. His eyes, narrow and sunken beneath low brows, lacked warmth or human sympathy, often glowing with a cold, calculating light. He wore a dark, high-collared trench coat adorned with metallic braces and stitched patterns, echoing both military and ceremonial designs. His limbs, especially his arms, were augmented with grotesque biomechanical extensions—dark cords of living tissue grafted with technological constructs, often hidden beneath his sleeves. These cybernetic additions pulsated with unnatural life, and on his left arm, a grotesque cluster of living matter and tubing signaled his unnatural bond to Knives' biology.

Legato’s personality was defined by absolute devotion, sociopathic detachment, and a religious reverence for suffering—especially that of Vash the Stampede. He displayed little to no emotional variability outside of sadistic pleasure, maintaining a deadpan calm even when surrounded by death. His loyalty to Millions Knives was cult-like, grounded in the belief that humans were inherently inferior and deserving of extinction. Legato acted not for glory, wealth, or power, but to fulfill Knives’ vision of a world purged of humanity, and he embraced this mission with unwavering fervor. What set him apart from other killers was his deliberate cruelty—he did not simply seek to defeat enemies but to unravel their moral and psychological foundations. This was most apparent in how he treated Vash, whom he viewed as a blasphemy: a powerful being who dared to love humans. Legato sought to 'correct' this flaw through suffering, using the deaths of innocents as weapons and crafting no-win scenarios that would leave permanent scars. He spoke in riddles and quiet declarations, never raising his voice, yet always commanding absolute terror. Even among the Gung-Ho Guns, his presence was unquestioned—he was both their master and their executioner, capable of snuffing out dissent with a mere thought.

While Knives sought total annihilation of humanity, Legato’s methods were more insidious: he ensured the maximum suffering for his enemies, relishing their mental collapse over mere death. His presence was first felt in subtle manipulations; towns overrun by assassins, innocents placed in fatal moral quandaries, and bounty hunters provoked into violence not for coin, but for the sheer thrill of the hunt.

Powers and abilities

Legato Bluesummers was an extraordinary telekinetic, capable of manipulating organic and inorganic matter with lethal precision. His psychic control allowed him to seize control of human bodies, bending their limbs, twisting bones, or forcing them to move according to his will. He could command dozens of victims simultaneously, transforming them into unwilling soldiers or human shields. His mental range extended over vast distances, enabling him to coordinate massacres or manipulate combatants without physical proximity. Beyond telekinesis, Legato possessed heightened sensory perception, allowing him to read subtle movements and anticipate attacks. Though physically fragile, his psionic abilities made him a nearly insurmountable opponent in direct combat, as he could immobilize foes instantly or inflict death with a mere thought.

Legato uses metal threads, implanted in his brain, to control others as well as create barriers. A prime display of this ability is when he used in his first encounter with Knives. He used this power to survive Knives' attack and impressed the killer to such a point that he allowed him to become his right-hand man.
