Biography

The Light of Destruction (Japanese: 破滅の光, Hepburn: Hametsu no Hikari) was a being that was said to had been born billions of years ago from a white hole that released this mysterious force of energy. Yubel came into contact with this energy while she was in space, which distorted her sanity although it did not control her, probably because Yubel was a spirit of darkness so being exposed to the malignant entity of light had aberrant consequences. Jaden had also always been the individual destined to oppose the Light with Yubel being specifically created to protect Jaden's incarnation, The Supreme King until he was old enough to utilize his latent power to complete his mission. When this energy reached Earth it caused several calamities such as dictatorships and wars. Ten years before the events of the second season, the Light of Destruction was released, infecting a card created by Aster's father, "Destiny Hero - Plasma". When The D acquires the card by murdering Aster's father, it possesses him, causing him to develop an uncaring and sadistic alter ego. Afraid of what is happening to him, The D consults with a fortune teller named Sartorius. The Light takes Sartorius as his main host instead, but a small portion remains within The D, which helps him to ascend the Pro League and become world champion.

After possessing Sartorius, it sets the stage for the events of the second season by amassing a cult of brainwashed students and acquiring a satellite capable of extinguishing all life on Earth. It later partially infects Prince Ojin, who had been brainwashed to serve Sartorius in the Society of Light. It is ultimately sealed away, releasing Sartorius from its influence due to the efforts of Jaden and Aster. However, only the portion of it controlling Sartorius was destroyed and the Light still exists in the universe.

The Light of Destruction fully revealed itself as the true power behind Sartorius’s manipulations. Having used Sartorius as its host, it directly controlled him during a duel against Jaden Yuki, flooding the field with its 'Arcana Force' monsters. Through Sartorius, it commanded precise plays designed to corner Jaden, forcing his life points into critical danger. The Light’s action was not just in the manipulation of Sartorius but in its ability to warp fate itself during the duel, turning coin tosses and card draws consistently in its favor. The Light of Destruction struck more aggressively as Jaden resisted. Manifesting through Sartorius, it activated “Arcana Force EX – The Light Ruler,” overwhelming Jaden’s monsters with brute force. The Light manipulated the duel’s momentum by ensuring the victory of its monster’s coin-toss effect, reflecting attacks back at Jaden and nearly depleting his deck. When Jaden retaliated with his Elemental Heroes, the Light shifted its tactics by seizing control of Sartorius’s hand and forcibly discarding cards to set traps that negated Jaden’s advances. The entity’s actions here showed how it directly enforced its will through Duel Monsters mechanics. The Light of Destruction fought in its final confrontation with Jaden. When Sartorius’s willpower began to break free, the Light forcibly reasserted control and pushed the duel to its climax by unleashing “Arcana Force EX – The Dark Ruler” alongside its Light counterpart, creating a two-pronged assault meant to erase Jaden entirely. Jaden countered through “Neos” and his connection to Yubel, but the Light actively warped the duel with illusions and auras of blinding radiance that threatened to destroy the field itself. In its last actions before being sealed, the Light lashed out, collapsing Sartorius’s body to try and consume Jaden directly, but was banished when Sartorius rejected it.

Jaden later came to learn that the Light of Destruction made his childhood card, Yubel, even more dangerous than it was before. He was also soon taken to the past where he learned that Yubel was given the mission to protect a young prince, who held the power of The Supreme King, as he fought the light waves of chaos. As a result, Jaden decided to fuse with the soul of Yubel, and together they went off to fulfill the mission.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, the Light of Destruction was not a singular physical being but an overwhelming aura of white radiance. When manifested, it appeared as blinding flashes of divine light, occasionally taking on distorted humanoid or celestial silhouettes through Sartorius’s body. Its essence was radiant but also suffocating, meant to obliterate darkness and free will in equal measure. The Light often warped Sartorius’s eyes and aura, surrounding him with an unnatural glow.

The Light of Destruction was an extremely vile and destructive being that enjoys the annihilation of all life in the universe. It believes that it is justified for its actions in causing destruction across the universe because it believes that destruction is normal. The Light is adamant that its goals will always prevail and is arrogant. When it possess or corrupts someone, the individual's personality becomes as sadistic and malicious as the Light of Destruction itself.

The Light of Destruction was manipulative, authoritarian, and wholly convinced of its supremacy. It acted as a godlike overseer, dismissing free will as chaos and insisting that absolute control under its rule was the only truth. It used Sartorius as a puppet but cared nothing for him as a person, discarding vessels and followers once they lost usefulness. It carried itself with cold confidence, rarely showing fear, but revealed desperation when Sartorius rebelled against its control.

The ultimate ambition of the Light of Destruction had been described as destroying all life in the universe, but the Light is arrogant in its beliefs that its actions are justified. The light boasts that destruction is the destiny of the universe and actually claims that the universe had been destroyed many times before.

On Earth, one of his primary hosts was a human named Sartorius Kumar was a fortune-teller with dual personalities. Being under the influence of the Light of Destruction, the person whose real name was Takuma Saiou was poised to remake the world in the image most befitting to the extraterrestrial radiance within him.

Powers and abilities

In powers, the Light of Destruction wielded dominion over fate, probability, and manipulation of Duel Monsters. It could influence coin tosses, card draws, and even alter the effects of Arcana Force monsters to suit its will. Beyond the duel system, it had psychic and metaphysical abilities, such as controlling Sartorius’s body, creating illusions, warping light into destructive force, and attempting to consume souls directly. Its greatest weakness lay in its dependence on hosts and vessels—it could not maintain a lasting form in the human world without possession.

The Light had the ability to possess living beings.

It was responsible for influencing humans to create a cult of followers known as the Society of Light (光の結社, Hikari no Kessha).
