History

Pre-Crisis

Limbo

Villains from Earth-One and Earth-Two came to work together where they formed the Crime Champions who sought to perpetrate schemes on both worlds. They came to operate from the void between the two realities allowing them to hide from their reality's heroes and also travel between the worlds. (Justice League of America v1 #21)

Whilst travelling through the timestream, Barry Allen inadvertently landed in Limbo where he became a target of the Lord of Limbo who wanted to add the Flash to his collection. (The Flash v1 #284)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Limbo

Animal Man came to find himself within the land of Limbo. Whilst there, Buddy met Merryman, who explained that that they were in Comic Book Limbo. He claims Buddy had been there recently, but forgotten, since he left. (Animal Man v1 #25)

During the Final Crisis, various incarnations of Superman came upon Limbo after being shot down in their Carrier there. They came to use the Library of Limbo to help repair their vessel and in the process learnt the origin of the Monitors. (Final Crisis: Superman Beyond v1 #1)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Limbo

The Outsiders came to end up in Limbo during their search for the lost members of Planetary. (Outsiders v5 #6)

Overview

In appearance, Limbo was a realm that was defined as being the furthest edge of the Multiverse. The dimension was also known as the Limbo Sphere. (Multiversity Guidebook v1 #1) It was also known as the Limbo Between Worlds and also as Nowhere. (Sandman v2 #47) Some also came to refer to it as the Limbo Lands. (Batman: The Brave and the Bold v2 #15) It was also called the Place Between. (Outsiders v5 #5) Or as the Place Between Places. (Outsiders v5 #6)

Limbo was said to be the chaos beyond Hell and where matter and memory break down. (Multiversity Guidebook v1 #1)

Locations in Limbo included:

  • City of Formation : (Animal Man v1 #25)
  • Library of Limbo : home to a single book with an infinite number of pages all occupying the same space meaning no one could read it. It was said to contain every possible book in existence within its pages. (Final Crisis: Superman Beyond v1 #1)

It was noted that powers did not work within the realms of Limbo. (Outsiders v5 #6)

Limbo was said to be home to the lost and forgotten of the Orrery of Worlds. (Multiversity Guidebook v1 #1)

Everyone was treated the same and it was said nothing happened in this realm which meant there were no stories. (Final Crisis: Superman Beyond v1 #1)

People who stayed too long in Limbo began to lose their memories and in time began to fade from the memories of people that knew them. (Final Crisis: Superman Beyond v1 #1) Those that managed to leave Limbo never remembered their time in that realm. (Animal Man v1 #25)
