Biography
Lord Pumpkin originated in one of the many realms existing within the Godwheel, a cosmic artifact of tremendous size. He was created by a wizard to be the playmate of a spoiled-brat prince from a medieval kingdom. However, the prince (who liked to torture animals, among other disturbing things) found great pleasure in tormenting his new "toy," frequently burning him or chopping him up with an axe. The creature finally rebelled, slew the prince, and overthrew the kingdom. Now hungry for new worlds to conquer, the being, now calling himself Lord Pumpkin, set his sights on the Ultraverse's Earth. He felt that the great number of superhumans, or "Ultras," would prove to be an entertaining challenge.
Lord Pumpkin’s earliest recorded activities began when a young boy, the spoiled heir of a powerful mob boss, demanded a plaything from his father’s sorcerer. Using black magic, the sorcerer created a grotesque yet dignified figure with the head of a jack-o’-lantern, carving life into it and granting it movement. Though intended as a toy and servant, Lord Pumpkin quickly revealed himself as independent and malevolent, using his abilities to subvert the boy’s authority and assert dominance. He displayed cunning intelligence and a cruel wit, turning on those who mocked or underestimated him. This first incident marked his transition from creation to master, as he rejected servitude and established himself as a dangerous entity in his own right. (Exiles v1 #1) In his next documented actions, Lord Pumpkin asserted himself as more than a conjured servant—he became a true villain in his own right. He turned against the mob family that had sought to control him, using his mystical powers to slaughter those who stood in his way. His pumpkin-headed visage became synonymous with carnage as he employed fire and sorcery to lay waste to his former master’s operations. Rather than being content with personal vengeance, he began to build his own empire, sowing fear and respect among criminals and civilians alike. The boy who once claimed him as a toy was reduced to irrelevance, as Lord Pumpkin assumed the role of a crime lord with his own loyal following. (Exiles v1 #2) Lord Pumpkin’s power and ambition escalated further when he crossed paths with superhumans of the Ultraverse. No longer confined to underworld dealings, he expanded his influence into larger conflicts, testing his sorcery against those with extraordinary abilities. His activities included manipulating situations to his benefit, exploiting fear and weakness, and destroying those who underestimated the depths of his arcane power. Though not omnipotent, his capacity for cruelty and intelligence in wielding his mystical arsenal allowed him to stand toe-to-toe with beings of immense strength. By this point, his reputation had cemented him as a central and recurring threat, capable of challenging heroes on both mystical and physical fronts. (Exiles v1 #3)
Lord Pumpkin's reign over his kingdom would be cut down when he was destroyed by a force of invading knights. Due to the intervention of a being calling himself Mr. Mischief, Lord Pumpkin and the one surviving knight, Arielle both traveled to Earth. Pumpkin was now a frightened, abused creature, which manifested out a garbage dump and had been sold to a circus. He was now the fall man in a clown-fire-rescue scene. His only friend was a circus boy named Kenny, also abused.
While most of the people of the city were driven temporarily mad by the energies released from the Entity on the Moon, the young Pistol reported to Lord Pumpkin, revealing the nature of Sludge, who had been "puttin' the snuff on Marcello's men," and had been cast into the harbor by the maddened people after being defeated by Marcello's agent Bloodstorm. Lord Pumpkin sent his Rivermen to locate Sludge and bring him back to his base, the Majestic Theatre, hoping to recruit Sludge to his side. Sludge attempted to attack Lord Pumpkin, but after being blasted, he realized that Lord Pumpkin could kill him--which was exactly what Sludge wanted. Sludge continued his assault, but Lord Pumpkin's Rivermen held him back, and Lord Pumpkin explained to Sludge that he would indeed kill him, but only if he earned his death. Just then, Marcello's men burst into Lord Pumpkin's base via their War Machine tank, slaughtering several of Lord Pumpkin's men and Rivermen. After briefly reveling in the show of violence, Lord Pumpkin blasted the War Machine, destroying it, but it blew up and killed most others present. Lord Pumpkin, Sludge, and Pistol survived, and Lord Pumpkin reiterated his offer to kill Sludge after he had served him for a time. As Sludge considered refusing the offer, one of Marcello's men crawled from the wreckage and began firing on them. Sludge slew their attacker, but then left, not wishing to serve the vile Lord Pumpkin. (Sludge v1 #3) Lord Pumpkin watched with glee via his magic egg as Sludge sought a way to kill himself. (Sludge v1 #5) Lord Pumpkin's agent Tabitha made Zuke deliveries and received payments from attorney Roger Sutton, account executive William Fulmer, and investment banker Randall Templeton, but she was ambushed by agents of Marcello, who slew her and dumped her outside the Majestic Theatre. Lord Pumpkin--who considered Tabitha his favorite courier and hoped that their relationship might someday transcend business--was enraged and promised to punish her killer. Lord Pumpkin sent Pistol and the rest of his men to hit the streets and find out who killed Tabitha. After they left he praised Tabitha's strong and brave spirit, saying she had served him well, and that she would serve him once more in death: "Life is sweet, and memories fleet--and the Zuke Plants always need something to eat. Good night, dearest Tabitha." Lord Pumpkin perhaps had his men bomb a ship of the Playgo America Corporation, the legitimate front for the Dragon Fang criminal group, causing the leader of the Dragon Fang, Wong Ten Yu, to arrange a meeting with John Paul Marcello. Lord Pumpkin learned of this meeting from Pistol, and Sludge confronted him as he prepared to secretly observe the meeting. Yu and Marcello proposed an alliance to take down Lord Pumpkin, who inspired Sludge to attack Marcello. As Sludge approached, Marcello mistook him for an agent of the Dragon Fang, and the two crime lords held each other at gunpoint while Sludge slaughtered their men. Wanting the crime lords to know what it meant to be his enemy, Lord Pumpkin then appeared and blew up their cars and several of their men with an energy blast. When Sludge insisted that Lord Pumpkin pay him via killing him, Lord Pumpkin refused, telling Sludge that he had only made a small down payment on his service. Lord Pumpkin then commanded Sludge to return to the sewer, threatening him with immense pain without killing him. (Sludge v1 #6)
Mr. Mischief appeared again, with a strange candle which altered 'Pumpy', as Kenny called him. Lord Pumpkin awoke and waited for the next routine. The dog he was supposed to jump with, he hurled to its death and the various abusive members of the circus were killed or tortured. Arielle manifested also and managed to seemingly kill the creature. Lord Pumpkin convinced Kenny to eat one of his seeds.
Kenny would later morph into Lord Pumpkin, by eating a pumpkin seed. He battles Warstrike, then becomes involved in the Godwheel incident. During this, he kills Flygirl, who was working with Hardcase.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Lord Pumpkin was a humanoid figure distinguished by his grotesque pumpkin head, carved with a sinister grin that burned with an inner light. His body was tall and imposing, dressed in elaborate garments reminiscent of aristocratic finery. He often wore ornate coats, gloves, and boots that reinforced his air of twisted nobility, presenting himself as a figure of refinement despite his monstrous nature. His pumpkin head was the centerpiece of his appearance, with jagged teeth, hollow eyes glowing with eldritch flame, and a constantly flickering aura that suggested both life and sorcery. (Exiles v1 #1)
Lord Pumpkin’s personality was a blend of cruelty, arrogance, and dark sophistication. He relished in mocking his opponents, often toying with them before delivering a killing blow. Though sadistic, he presented himself with an air of refinement, speaking eloquently and holding himself as if he were royalty rather than a magical construct. He displayed cunning intelligence, carefully manipulating others to serve his ends, and took particular delight in turning the weaknesses of his enemies against them. His sadism was tempered by strategy, making him not a reckless destroyer but a calculating ruler with ambitions beyond simple violence. (Exiles v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
Lord Pumpkin is a magical being, usually embodied in a scarecrow-like body of straw and twigs, with a pumpkin carved like a jack-o-lantern for a head. Inside his head is a candle, whose ever-lit flame is often mistaken to be his life-force. He can use it to breathe a blast of fire from his mouth.
Lord Pumpkin’s powers were rooted in the sorcery that gave him life. He possessed immense control over fire, capable of conjuring and projecting it at will, often through his jack-o’-lantern head. His body was durable, resistant to most forms of conventional harm, as he was not a living man but a magical construct sustained by dark forces. He could summon arcane energy, bend weaker minds to his will, and animate objects or environments through his sorcery. His immortality was implicit in his very creation, as he did not age or tire in the way of mortals. These traits made him uniquely suited to both magical duels and the role of a crime lord who thrived on intimidation and raw power. (Exiles v1 #2)
Lord Pumpkin is an extremely skilled sorcerer, and is also nearly immortal; even if his body is totally destroyed, seeds from his pumpkin head are capable of growing a new body for him, sometimes by taking over and transforming the body of another living being if a seed has been ingested. He is not subject to pain nor disease and needs no air, food nor water.
His only weakness is the fragile materials his body is composed of: dry, flammable straw, and a ripe pumpkin. However, due to his strong magical abilities, attacks rarely get close enough to harm him. He can still be taken by surprise, however.
