Biography
Origin
Lorena Marquez was a female human born in the modern age where she lived with her parents in San Diego. At some point, she met a boy named Chris and went out on a date with him to the San Diego Zoo where he worked for his parents in order to pay for rent. At that moment, an earthquake had hit the city and caused it to sink beneath the sea thus killing thousands including Lorena's entire family. She along with the survivors were transformed in the process where they gained the ability to breathe water like Atlanteans but could no longer operate on the surface anymore. After regaining consciousness, she panicked and managed to escape the debris where she made her way to the surface. It was then that Aquaman grabbed her and pulled her into the water as he had seen another such survivor die on the surface. He took Lorena to the Justice League Watchtower where he kept her in a water environment and helped stabilise her body. The Martian Manhunter and Aquaman then peered into her mind telepathically in order to ascertain what happened in the disaster. (Aquaman v6 #16)
Lorena began to display unexpected adaptations to her new environment. She could now breathe underwater and withstand the pressures of the deep sea, abilities that manifested after the mystical sinking of San Diego. Drawn to Aquaman as both a protector and mentor, she followed him as he patrolled the ruined city. It was during this time that she first took on the mantle of Aquagirl, asserting herself as a partner to the King of Atlantis. (Aquaman v6 #17)
Lorena actively assisted Aquaman in combat situations, fending off hostile forces that preyed on the vulnerable survivors of Sub Diego. Though inexperienced and often impulsive, she showed bravery in confronting enemies directly and displayed natural instincts in underwater battle. Alternate Versions
- In Teen Titans/Legion Special v1 #1 (2004), an alternate version of Lorena Marquez appeared in the Titans Tomorrow possible future reality that existed within the Multiverse. This adult version of Lorena had taken on the name of Aquawoman and her powers had improved giving her telepathic abilities.
