History

The Machines were a series of robots that were created in the late 2040's by Faro Automated Solutions who began developing robots built for combat.

In 2064, a 'glitch' occurred in the Faro machines causing them to operate as an independent entity. In response, Faro Automated Systems CEO Ted Faro met with former employee Dr. Elizabet Sobeck in hopes of containing the swarm. Dr. Sobeck concluded that there was no way to stop the swarm and predicted a mass extinction level event as a result of the Faro Plague. To stop the machines and stave off extinction, Sobeck proposed the creation of Project Zero Dawn that would be a way to ensure life continued on Earth after the swarm consumed everything. By this point, mankind was engaged in a full-fledged war with the machines with the project working in secret. Meanwhile, the Zero Dawn project began development of an advanced intelligence known as GAIA that would crack the machine swarm's encryption codes in order to deactivate them. It was then intended for the Earth to be re-seeded with plant, animal and human life. For this task, GAIA was aided by nine subroutines to help in the terraforming process.
