The Magdalene Grimoire

Overview

In appearance, the Magdalene Grimoire had appeared as an ancient, leather-bound tome overflowing with occult authority. Its dark cover was embossed with intricate sigils and arcane symbols that exuded a faint, unsettling glow. The pages were brittle parchment, densely filled with swirling runes and ritualistic diagrams, each bearing the weight of decades spent in secret ceremonies. Though its text was written in archaic script, scholars noted that its contents transcended language—revealing cosmic truths and hidden names that echoed with mystic power. (Sandman v2 #1)

The Grimoire’s purpose and function were rooted in ritual and summoning. It had served as the catalyst for Burgess’s attempt to bring Death into his world—a ritual that misfired spectacularly, trapping Dream, the Lord of Dreams, instead. Detailed instructions within the text had included chants invoking the “Names of the Old Lords”—Namtar, Allatu, Morax, Naberius, and others—aimed at breaching the cosmic barrier between life and the Endless. Though Burgess’s ambition failed, the book proved potent: it allowed the binding of an entire Endless being, imprisoned beneath glass for over seventy years. Its function was not mere prophecy, but active manipulation of the cosmic order. (Sandman v2 #1)
