Magic Knights (Black Clover)

The Magic Knights are an organization that features in Black Clover.

History

The Order of the Magic Knights (魔法騎士団 Mahō Kishi-dan) were an organization of magic users who served as protectors of the Clover Kingdom.

The Royal Capital later came under attack from Rades Spirito who used his wraith magic to summon hordes of undead to attack the city in an act of revenge against the Magic Knights.

After discovering the Eye of the Midnight Sun's headquarters, the King Augustus Kira Clover XIII of the Clover Kingdom formed a new elite squad of warriors called the Royal Knights (王撰騎士団 ロイヤルナイツ Roiyaru Naitsu) that were to be chosen from the ranks of the Magic Knights. A selection exam was made to chose the worthy that were to be tasked with leading the assault on the enemy.

Once the Royal Knights were assembled, they were put under the command of Mereoleona Vermillion where she led them in a coordinated attack against the enemy headquarters. Unknown to them, the Eye of the Midnight Sun were enacted their own plans that saw a detachment of their members attack the base of the Black Bulls to claim the magic stones taken by the squad. Meanwhile, the groups leader Licht confronted the Wizard King under his alternate guise of William Vangeance leading to a battle between the pair. Initially, Licht was unable to defeat his foe's time magic and thus decided to target the Clover Kingdom itself where he used his light magic in a powerful attack to kill all its citizens. To stop it, the Wizard King used a powerful counter-spell to reverse the assault but this depleted him of his power thus giving Licht an opening to deal a critical blow. Fatally wounded, the Wizard King was helpless in stopping Licht from taking the magic stones and departing. He then initiated the next step of his plan which was reviving the slain Elf tribe whose souls lay dormant in various human bodies. This caused a number of Magic Knights to become possessed by Elf souls who then attacked the humans in vengeance for being slain long ago. Their actions led to a great deal of devastation to the Clover Kingdom and even divided the Royal Knights when most of their members were revealed to had been hosts to Elf souls.

Thus, an ultimatum was made as the nobles required Asta to prove the existence of Devils in order to showcase the innocence of himself as well as his fellow Magic Knights. Around this time, the Black Bulls were secretly tasked with finding more evidence on the existence of Devils in the world. Their search led them to discover a powerful curse mark that existed within the Heart Kingdom with them being securing an invitation to meet its ruler. She revealed that she was the victim of a curse mark from the Devil Megicula who was hiding within the Spade Kingdom. Their power was shown to be incredible with the Black Bulls undergoing an intense training regimen in order to defeat the Devil.

Overview

In appearance, the Magic Knights were an organization of magic users that were citizens of the Clover Kingdom and tasked with serving as the nation's military. Thus, they were considering of holding the noble duty of protecting the kingdom from a wide range of threats from invasions by foreign nations to local crimes within the realm. A Knight was indicated by them wearing a robe that indicated their affiliation to specific squads in the organization.

Members of the Magic Knights were divided into nine different squads each of whom were led by one of their own that held the title of captain (団長 danchō) of the squad. The different squads possessed their own insignia that corresponded with their name and wore distinctive signature robes that helped differentiate the various squads from one another.

The nine different squads included:

Recruitment occurred after those with magic power went through the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony and chosen by a grimoire. Once they possessed a grimoire, they were eligible to take part in the Magic Knights Entrance Exam whereby anti-magic birds surrounded those with weak magic power whilst the strongest had no birds around them as an indicator on strength. They then went through a number of trials such as using magic to ride brooms and other such tests of power. This eventually led to a one-on-one duel between two contestants with these being overseen by the captains of the various squads. Once completed, all candidates were gathered and called forth by number whereby a captain could express interest in having a person in their squad. Multiple captains could select a candidate and it was the recruit that decided which squad they wanted to be accepted in by the end. However, if a candidate was called forth and no hands were raised by the captains then they were rejected by the Magic Knights with them being forced to depart.

Upon joining the Magic Knights, every member received a salary on a regular basis as their role was considered an occupation with the money typically distributed by a squad's respective captain. Acts of exceptional importance led to members being awarded a star as a sign of achievement. These were given by the Magic Emperor themselves to the individual knight or even to a group that had performed a mission together as a unit. Black stars were awarded for failed missions or for poor performance such a damaging towns that were damaged by the knights activities with these counting in he squad's total. Individuals that were seen as dangerous were exiled from the ranks of the Magic Knights.

An annual event conducted by the Knights was the War Merits Conferment Ceremony whereby members that produced multiple excellent results were summoned to the Royal Capital. Once there, they received promotions from the Magic Emperor himself with their achievements was recognised. It was expected that a Captain of a squad was to be present as their subordinates received a medal. Another annual event was the Star Awards Festival (星果祭 Seika-sai, Viz: "Star Festival") that was held in the capital whereby a celebration was made over the Knights achievements and the revelation of the squads rankings based on the number of stars awarded for achievements made in the year.

Within the Knights, all members were typically accepted into the ranks whether they were nobility or commoner. Despite this being the case, there was a degree of classism among the Magic Knights with the nobles believing themselves superior to the commoners. The nobility of the Clover Kingdom were responsible for funding the Knights and often gave them assignments such as escort details for one of their number.

Their headquarters was located in the royal capital of the Clover Kingdom though each of the various squads maintained their own separate bases for their members. Beneath the capital, there was a special secret prison that the Knights used to hold prisoners for interrogation.

• William Vangeance : a white haired male with a scar covering the upper portion of his face who was born as the illegitimate offspring of a royal and considered a cursed child. A wielder of world tree magic, he gained the attention of Julius Novachrono who accepted the boy and gifted him a mask after seeing that he struggled with his appearance. Afterwards, Vangeance became a member of the Magic Knights where he struck a friendship with Yami Sukehiro with the two becoming Captains as William headed the Golden Dawn. Unknown to anyone else, William had the soul of an Elf within his body with the two considering one another friends. However, the Elf soul who went by the name of Licht despised humanity for murdering his tribe and thus created the Eye of the Midnight Sun where he enacted plans for resurrecting his people as well as getting their revenge.

• Fuegoleon Vermillion : a powerful male member of House Vermillion who became the leader of the Crimson Lion Kings after his sister refused the position where he was a noted fire magic user.
• Mereoleona Vermillion : a powerful female member of House Vermillion where she refused the offer of leading the Crimson Lion Kings Magic Knight squad but after her brother was critically wounded she stepped in as their leader to replace him.

• Charlotte Roselei : a blonde haired female of House Roselei and wielder of briar magic where she was afflicted with a curse that caused her powers to go out of control until she was saved by Yami Sukehiro. Afterwards, she joined the Magic Knights and rose to the position of Captain of the Blue Rose. Unknown to her, she had the soul of an Elf named Charla within her that awakened after the Eye of the Midnight Sun enacted their spell.
