Biography
Marshall Ward
Ward was a sardonic yet caring employee at a DVD rental store who still lived in their hometown of Lockport. His primary actions revolved around his reunion with the down-on-his-luck Nathan, who had returned home due to financial struggles. Marshall was present when they discovered a mysterious, floating black-hole-like entity, which bonded with Nathan and granted him superpowers. Shortly after, as Nathan was testing his new powers and became disoriented, a concerned Marshall stood by him on the train tracks, even as local police officers arrived. When a train suddenly approached, Marshall attempted to get the police to leave them alone, but Nathan's panic-fueled actions inadvertently levitated the officers and the entire train. Marshall then negotiated with the freaked-out police to ensure their silence in exchange for Nathan putting them down. Following this chaotic incident, Nathan flew Marshall away to a grain silo, where Marshall offered words of comfort and listened as Nathan revealed his professional failures. While Marshall himself did not have powers in this initial appearance, he was actively involved as Nathan's supportive, yet grounded, friend, reacting with a mix of excitement and practical thinking to the extraordinary situation. (Radiant Black v1 #1) He and Nathan then looked to understand the mystery of the Radiant's power. Marshall was still the supportive, grounded friend, reacting with a mixture of concern and practical thinking to Nathan's new abilities. After the train incident from the previous issue, Marshall joined Nathan as they tried to understand the nature of the powers and how they worked. They engaged in discussions about the cosmic black hole entity that had bonded with Nathan, with Marshall offering his often sardonic, movie-informed perspective. Marshall did not gain powers himself in this issue; he remained on the sidelines as Nathan began exploring his new capabilities. He witnessed Nathan's struggles to control the gravity-based powers and the immediate, real-world complications that came with being a fledgling superhero, such as the potential for public exposure and the inability of these powers to immediately fix their mundane, real-life problems like debt and career failures. Marshall's primary role continued to be that of a confidant and a moral compass, grounding Nathan in reality while they both tried to process the extraordinary event they had experienced.
