Biography

Master Khan

In his youth, he claimed to had been simply a scholar who loved his wife and children. During that time, his only main desire was to learn all he could about the universe. This was until the King of Halwan who sat on the Lion Throne came to hear about Khan being adept in the occult arts. The monarch had sought power and wanted Khan to make this a reality for him but the young scholar refused. In anger, the king had his men abduct the scholar's family and promised to spare them if he served the monarch. To prove he was serious, the monarch had the scholar's youngest daughter tortured and as she was frail she died as a result of being on the torture rack. The scholar's soul was said to had died with her and he sought revenge of equal value for what he had lost. Thus, he had the king's daughter killed and claimed his throne as the price for his service. (Iron Fist v1 #7)

Many centuries ago, the dragon Chiantang razed the city of K'un-Lun as vengeance after a mortal had debased his niece. As a result, Master Khan suffered a loss to his powerbase and was angry when the dragon approached him for forgiveness. Despite the loss of 70,000 lives, Master Khan decided to pardon the dragon so that he did not act out once again now that his rage against his target was sated after he turned the perpetrator into a serpent as punishment for his crime. (Power Man and Iron Fist v1 #118)

Years later, the serpent Shou-Lao was slain by the Iron Fist and news of the death reached the palace of the Dragon King. From there, Chiantang learnt that the person he had cursed with eternal life had been slain and he grew angry that he had lost face. Thus, the dragon transformed and sought to raze K'un-Lun for defying him but whilst on his journey he was confronted by Master Khan. Master Khan forbade the dragon from his vengeance with Chiantang deciding to disregard him. However, the sorcerers power was so great that he forcibly turned the dragon into a powerless mortal. He then had Chiantang taken to K'un-Lun where he commanded that he be imprisoned for the rest of time. To ensure his captivity, Master Khan provided the guards with a mystically crafted water blade called Dragonslayer to be used to banish the dragon to the netherworld should he ever seek freedom. (Power Man and Iron Fist v1 #118)

Three years later, Master Khan suffered a great loss in his power due to the actions of the Iron Fist. It was around this time that the niece of the dragon Chiantang decided to free her uncle and crafted a mystical guise to masquerade as a guard. Unaware of her disguise, Chiantang slew her after he was freed and after seeing her true form he went into a rage where he blamed the mortals for her death. He transformed into a dragon and laid waste to K'un-Lun with the weakened Master Khan unable to stop him. Master Khan along with the Yu-Ti fled the city to safety as the sorcerer sought to restore his full power once again. (Power Man and Iron Fist v1 #118)

He later intervened in Namor's battle against the H'ylthri who were conducting their invasion of Earth. Upon manifesting, he teleported Wolverine away and then used his magic to destroy the H'ylthri invaders as he did not want them to succeed in turning the world into a place dominated by plants. Despite his aid, he was not an ally of the heroes and in fact was angered at the Sub-Mariner's assistance to Danny Rand. It was his alliance with the Iron Fist that marked him as Khan's enemy where he used his magic to punish by stripping him of his memory and sending him somewhere else in the world. To the Atlanteans cousin Namorita, he decided to spare her but only because he wanted her to know the loss of being unable to find her cousin again. (Namor the Sub-Mariner v1 #25)
