Biography
Eshu was the name of a male human born at the dawn of history. (Heroes for Hire v1 #8) He lived around 40,000 years ago when Earth was in the grip of the Ice Age during a time when countless millions died from the freezing elements. During this time, he was a hunter that was part of a nomadic tribe where he demanded more food, women and resources that brought him into conflict with his kin. As a result, he was banished from the tribe who had a conduct against killing and left him to wander the endless winter by himself. It was due to his strength that he managed to survive the cold and he was drawn north by a call that echoed to him. He eventually arrived at the source which was a cashed alien starship that belonged to the Plodex race. Upon approaching the craft, automated systems activated which captured him and took him for experimentation where he was dissected as part of the ships functions. It was said that he went through intolerable and unimaginable pain where he was driven insane as his body was cut open leaving only his brain that became a branch of the computer matrix. Such was the case for 30,000 years but it was his incredible in dominatable will that brought him back from his madness and began to subsume command of the ships systems. Thus, he took control of the ship and reconstituted a more perfect biological body for himself though remained trapped within the ship which became his fortress. Through a study of its databanks, he came to learn of the creators of the craft and also learnt of events occurring on Earth over thousands of years. (Alpha Flight v1 #3)
In reality, the Master had actually survived though his body was hurled into the freezing waters where he would have perished there had an underwater escape craft he had created not recovered him. He then escaped into the polar ocean whilst his foes in Alpha Flight believed that he had perished in the explosion. In this state, he was now free from his imprisonment of the Plodex vessel and could embark on his schemes more freely. (Alpha Flight v1 #16)
At some point, he took over the sunken fortress of Hydra Island that became his new base of operations. During this time, he sought to control the global population but not through outright culling but rather through sterilising much of the world. This would allow the Master to control the birth of new humans and secure his control over the Earth. To accomplish that, he required the use of Compound Omega that was in the possession of Professor Wolfgang Hessler. By this point, he saw the biggest threat to the planet being the returning supervillains that were coming back in the wake of the Onslaught crisis. In addition, he learnt that the hidden city of K'un-Lun was manifesting on the planet at the request of Danny Rand with this being deemed a threat to the Master's own plans. Around this time, the White Tiger of the New Men had been approached by the Master who was looking for her to acquire an object for him. In exchange, he provided her information as to the location of the Man-Beast who was said to had been in confinement at the Vault with the two parting ways after this exchange. (Heroes for Hire v1 #12)
He later returned to Canada where he began an operation in the north to have his machines to reclaim the ice to stop global warming which he secretly by capturing Sila the spirit of the frozen north and tapping into her mystical energy against her will. This provoked a large protest from the native community with the Champions arriving at the scene who came under attack from the Master's drones. However, he stopped hostilities and helped heal Sam Alexander from a grievous injury where he proclaimed his peaceful intentions as his plans to conquer the world required him to save it first. Thus, the Champions reluctantly decided to allow him to continue as they believed he was saving the world. The Masters actions attracted the attention of Alpha Flight who attempted to arrest him but the Champions opposed them. This battle was stopped when Silla bonded to a young Inuit girl named Amka Aliyak who revealed the Master's deception. Upon facing the two superhero teams, Eshu decided to depart and detonated his technology whereupon he escaped. (Champions v2 #21)
In pursuit of the Champions, he came upon a world that he investigated that transported to him to the time-distorted Weirdworld. Once there, he established himself as a new ruler of the mystical realm and created a kingdom after he took in the amnesiac Sam Alexander and Nadia van Dyne. (Champions v2 #26)
