Biography
Maya Hansen
In time, she made a reputation for herself as a medical designer who specialised on work in reprogramming the repair centre in the body. She attended an emergent tech conference where she encountered Tony Stark who was barely out of his twenties. Maya was the only person to speak to Stark and engage with him as the others were intimidated by his intellect. She went with him to attend a talk by computer scientist, ethnobotanist futurist Sal Kennedy. (Iron Man v4 #1)
Hansen started to work on biological military apps for the military in order to get funding for her real project which was to cure diseases. (Iron Man v4 #2) She later became a head researcher at FuturePharm with her colleague being Aldrich Killian with the two working on the Extremis Enhancile. (Iron Man v4 #1) Faced with a lack of funding, she came to be involved in an attempt to leak Extremis to outside parties under the belief that this would force her defence contractors to renew the project. (Iron Man v4 #6)
Maya then contacted Tony Stark who met her at the FuturePharm facility where she said that Killian had stolen her project and given it to unknown parties. (Iron Man v4 #2)
Stark came to be severely beaten by the terrorist Mallen who had been injected with the virus with Tony convincing Maya to inject him with Extremis as well to repair his body. (Iron Man v4 #4) Tony defeats and apprehends Mallen, but he discovers that Killian could not have acted alone in selling Extremis. Tony confronts Maya, who confesses to assisting in the crime as she knew it would force defense contractors to renew their funding. She is subsequently taken into custody. (Iron Man v4 #6)
Advanced Idea Mechanics later forced her to reconstruct Extremis with her managing to escape to send a message notifying Tony Stark but she was killed by an A.I.M. soldier. (Iron Man v5 #1)
Overview
Personality and attributes
Kennedy had compared her to being the 'Edward Teller of biology'. Despite her genius, Kennedy remarked that one of the barriers for Maya was that she was a woman and thus suffered from a glass ceiling in society that made it so it would take her 5 to 10 years to accomplish the same level recognition as the likes of Tony Stark. Hansen was also noted that her focus was on a super-soldier project that long bugged her as she wanted to achieve a feat like Erskine's creation of Captain America. (Iron Man v4 #2)
She maintained a close friendship with her old mentor Sal Kennedy. (Iron Man v4 #2)
Powers and abilities
According to The Mandarin, Maya possessed the genetic sequence that would allow her to survive the exposure to Extremis. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #25)
She had at least three PhD's where she said that one of them was in botany. (Iron Man v4 #10) Her own field was in bioelectrics, robotics and microsurgery. (Iron Man v4 #2)
One of her notable projects involved microelectronic plug-ins for the brain with this leading to the creation of Extremis. (Iron Man v4 #2)
Hansen came to be a salaried independent scientist that worked for corporations where she at one point worked at her company called FuturePharm. (Iron Man v4 #2)
