History

The Medjai were the bodyguards of the Egyptian Pharaohs in ages past and were responsible for inflicting the most terrible of curses on Imhotep. After this act was done, the descendants of the Medjai formed a society that were tasked with preventing anyone finding the mummy of the high priest Imhotep and bringing him back to life.

During the Holy Crusades of Europe, some of the Knights Templar – that had served in the wars – learned of the Scorpion King's existence and turned to watching over the Oasis of Ahm Shere. They recorded their own existence in the form of bas-reliefs on the walls of the golden pyramid within the Oasis, depicting instructions on how to slay the Scorpion King by using the golden staff known as the Scepter of Osiris. The Knights became known by the Medjai as warriors for God and protectors of mankind, and fellow brothers-in-arms worthy of membership.

They consisted of twelve tribes with commanders leading them which numbered in thousands of men. The assembled Medjai army gathered to combat the Army of Anubis that had arisen to conquer the world.

Overview

In appearance, the Medjai were a secret society that operated in the lands of Egypt for thousands of years. Originally, they were the bodyguards of the Pharaoh but after their lord's demise they dedicated to ensuring the fallen priest Imhotep did not rise again after they inflicted a terrible curse on him that turned him into one of the undead. For three thousand years, they were responsible for guarding the Hamunaptra the City of the Dead and to prevent Imhotep's tomb from being disturbed.

Many Medjai warriors were given facial tattoos placed on their forehead and cheeks in hieroglyphics (bearing the name of "Imhotep" and the word "truth"). Western Medjai, rather than having the conspicuous facial hieroglyphics that would stand out too much in their western societies, had the sacred symbol of the Medjai tattooed on their right outer wrist. They wore long dark robes with grey sashes, bandoliers, turbans and scarves. All Medjai were able to fight with blades as well as firearms, and were skilled in one-on-one combat. The warriors often rode horses through the deserts and took their foes by surprise whenever able to do so.

At manhood, they swore oaths to ensure that the High Priest Imhotep would not be reborn into the world

  • In The Mummy: The Animated Series, the Medjai appeared in the setting of the animated television series. According to the setting, Medjai was created by Amar, a son of a pharaoh's bodyguard. One of their number came to defect from their order and dedicate himself to evil with this being the Dark Medjai Nizam Toth. This came as a result of his discovery of the Dark Temple whose energies Toth felt would make the Medjai unstoppable. The elders, however, rejected this idea, believing this would corrupt the Medjai rather than strengthen them. Toth soon after wielded the dark energies and attacked the elders, after which he was excommunicated. In the past, Ardeth Bay himself underestimated Toth and was almost killed; as punishment for his misdeeds, Toth was incarcerated in a prison run by the Medjai order.
