Biography
Pre-Crisis
Medusa
Medusa performed several calculated and antagonistic actions that showcased her supernatural power and lack of moral restraint. Upon being released from a state of suspended animation within an ancient urn, she immediately surveyed her modern surroundings and identified potential targets for her gaze. She actively utilized her petrifying ability to transform a group of humans into stone statues, demonstrating no hesitation in using her power to clear her path and assert her dominance. Medusa engaged in a pursuit of Lois Lane, tracking her movements and utilizing the serpents on her head to detect the woman's hiding place. She deliberately manipulated the environment, using her petrified victims as physical barriers and decoys to disorient her pursuers. Throughout the encounter, she issued vocal threats and demands, asserting her status as a legendary figure who required subservience from those she deemed inferior. She also demonstrated her physical resilience by disregarding modern technology and weapons used against her, continuing her efforts to secure a specific magical artifact that she believed would restore her full mythological glory. (Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane v1 #52)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
She could turn people into stone with her eyes, a punishment from Pallas Athena for making love to Poseidon in a temple of the goddess of Wisdom. (Wonder Woman v2 #200) At some point, she mated with the cyclops Polyphemus and gave birth to the serpentine giant Cyclon (Sins of Youth: Wonder Girls v1 #1)
She was eventually beheaded by the hero Perseus. (Wonder Woman v2 #200)
The god of fear, Phobos, later used the heart of Medusa to create the demonic Decay, who battled Wonder Woman on numerous occasions. (Wonder Woman v2 #3)
During the second contest to become Wonder Woman, Diana of Themyscira encountered a serpent-bodied gorgon she believed to be Medusa. This gorgon turned several amazons to stone before being thrown off a cliff by Princess Diana. (Wonder Woman v2 #92)
Through the actions of a jealous Hera, Medusa's two gorgon sisters Euryale and Stheno were set free from their prison on Themyscira, and immediately schemed to resurrect their sister. Having only her head, they needed Circe's help. She refused, but after Poseidon promised her she would be reunited with her daughter Lyta, she agreed. (Wonder Woman v2 #204)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Medusa was a female humanoid of ancient Greek mythological descent who possessed a face that combined classical beauty with monstrous attributes. Her facial features were symmetrical and refined, characterized by wide-set, dark eyes and a small, straight nose, though her expression was fixed in a cold and menacing stare. In place of human hair, her scalp was covered by a dense cluster of active, green-scaled serpents that coiled and hissed in various directions. Her body type was slender and statuesque, possessing a lithe and well-proportioned frame consistent with the idealized female form of antiquity. She was dressed in a traditional ancient Greek stola or chiton made of a light, flowing fabric that was cinched at the waist by a simple cord or belt. The garment was sleeveless and draped over her shoulders, extending down to her ankles in soft pleats. She wore no elaborate jewelry or footwear, appearing in a minimalist style that emphasized her supernatural head and physical posture. (Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane v1 #52)
She once mated with the cyclops Polyphemus and had a son in the form of the serpentine giant Cyclon. (Sins of Youth: Wonder Girls v1 #1)
Powers and abilities
Medussa exhibited the primary supernatural ability of petrification, which allowed her to transform living beings into inanimate stone instantly upon making direct eye contact with them. She demonstrated the capacity to command and control the individual serpents that constituted her hair, utilizing them as sensory organs to detect movement and as offensive weapons to deliver venomous bites to nearby targets. She possessed an enhanced physical durability that allowed her to withstand the weight of stone structures and resist the effects of atmospheric pressure. Medussa also showed a level of supernatural longevity and resilience, maintaining her physical form and powers after long periods of dormancy. Additionally, she displayed the ability to navigate through darkness with high precision and exhibited a form of ancient knowledge that allowed her to identify and understand the weaknesses of mortals and gods alike. She also manifested a piercing, ultrasonic scream that could cause physical disorientation and structural damage to her immediate surroundings. (Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane v1 #52)
Medousa had been blessed by Circe with a vocal allure that compels others to turn towards her gaze when calling to them. (Wonder Woman v2 #208)
