Biography
Jock Kellog was a male human who lived in the modern age. By the 1940's, he was an adult male living London where he was a playboy who used his handsome features and money to spend time with many women. One day, he was at Piccadilly Circus when his fortune had been spent when during this time he was contacted by his uncle. It was revealed that his uncle was dying and the boy young playboy felt that his luck had changed as he was set to inherit his wealth. Travelling to his mansion, he met with his uncle who revealed that Jock was in fact the last descendant of Merlin the magician of King Arthur's court. Thus, he came to pass on the mystical cloak of Merlin to the boy telling him it was his inheritance. At first, Jock did not believe him and felt that he was given nothing. Returning to London, he came to find the crowd of women he used to hang around with wanted nothing to do with him now that he was penniless. After leaving a club, he decided to don the cloak given to him when he saw a woman falling from a building. Desperate to save her, he came to find that with a gesture he could gently grab her in the air and drop her safely on the ground. Thus, Jock came to learn the truth of his uncle's words that that he had inherited his ancestors powers. Months later, the world was engulfed in war where Jock came to witness a dying soldier on the battlefield. This saw him deciding to confront who he deemed responsible for this event with this being the Roman god of war and destruction Mars himself. Demanding a reason, Mars simply stated that it was for his amusement and was angered that a mortal would confront him in his realm. He would attempt to strike down Jock who disappeared where he discovered a captive a woman who was revealed to be Peace. She urged for Merlin to free her and he vowed to do so by confronting Mars. The god of war dispatched his two servants Poverty and Hunger to fight Jock who defeated both before facing off against Mars himself. (National Comics v1 #1)
His fight with the Roman God of War, Mars, would not be the last time he ventured to realms beyond the physical. When Singh Abeem invoked an ancient Hindi magic, the spirit of his deceased son, Prince Abeem, took revenge on his murderer's family, including Sybil Elliot, Merlin's ex-girlfriend. Merlin ventured to the Land of the Dead to rescue her from Prince Abeem and his council of ancestors. (National Comics v1 #2)
One night on a dark street, orphanage runaway Mickey, pursued by cruel authorities, crashes into Merlin the Greatest Magician on Earth and Merlin conceals him within his cloak and becomes invisible; the uniformed orphanage guards run right past them. Mickey tells of the abusive conditions at his orphanage, run by Mr. Dredge, and orphanage worker Miss Lovewell whom Mickey likes arrives to corroborate his account; Merlin accompanies them back to the place. Merlin confirms for himself that Mickey's story is on the level, and causes Dredge some well-deserved discomfort in the process. That night as the hungry boys are tossing in their drab quarters, Merlin and Miss Lovewell are in Dredge's office, working the standard investigative technique of breaking into the badguy's safe and helping themselves to all the incriminating paperwork inside it. Dredge interrupts them, but from Merlin's magic fingertips a host of tittering demons spring, sweep dredge upstairs to his own quarters, and generally terrorize him. Merlin comes upstairs to give Dredge a good scolding, but screams from the dormitory draw him there, in time to interrupt a whipping, with a real whip, being administered on Mickey by one orphanage attendant. That guy gets magically strangled unconscious with his own cat-o-nine-tails and dragged out of the room by Merlin. The next morning there is an assembly, for Mickey's public punishment, but Merlin is still there; he gestures and Dredge's torso inflates like a helium balloon, and he floats haplessly in place while Mickey punches him a few times, before Merlin deflates him. He drops onto the floor, hard, then some cops come into the room and take him away, under arrest for misappropriating orphanage funds. When Merlin leaves, Miss Lovewell is in charge of the orphanage, and a week later he gets a letter from Mickey about how much better things are now. (National Comics v1 #3)
Mars would also not be the only God of War he fought. Merlin also faced off against the Norse god Wotan, but managed to defeat him as well in a sword fight. (National Comics v1 #11)
