History

Origin

The Metal Men were a series of robots that were created by Will Magnus. (Showcase v1 #37)

Chemo returned to life and defeated the Metal Men, pinning them under a building. The Metal Men realized their powers were malfunctioning, so they visited S.T.A.R. Labs, where Superman was also being examined because his powers were malfunctioning. Dr. Jenet Klyburn concluded that massive solar flares caused by a magnetic beam were responsible for all their problems, and Superman suggested they team-up to find the source. The Metal men were all starstruck, and eagerly accepted. They found an isolated observatory where supervillain I.Q. had fired Chemo into the sun. He explained that he used a magnetic cannon to increase solar activity to improve his mental powers, but made a miscalculation, and determined that Chemo’s unique chemical composition was the only way to keep the sun from going nova. Superman double-checked his calculations and realized he was off by a decimal point, and that the sun would return to normal on its own, but Chemo would definitely make it go nova. Superman flew into space, intercepting Chemo, and bouncing him back to Earth, but the impact rendered him unconscious. The Metal Men battled Chemo and were nearly destroyed before Superman intervened. Chemo overheated trying to destroy Superman, so the hero hurled him into the atmosphere to explode. At S.T.A.R. Labs Superman performed delicate surgery to restore the Metal Men. (DC Comics Presents v1 #4)

With his prototypes, he decided to field test the reborn Metal Men and approached Lucius Fox about hiring them as security for Waynetech. Fox gave them a trial with Bruce Wayne being furious after some employees were injured leading to him giving Magnus and his creations a week to prove themselves. (Superman/Batman v1 #35)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Metal Men.

Television

Films

  • In Justice League: Gods and Monsters, the Metal Men appeared as antagonists in the alternate world setting of the animated movie and though present they were not named as such. They were all creations of Doctor Will Magnus who was a brilliant scientist in the field of robotics and nanotechnology. He created Tin to serve as a helper at this home and built the shapeshifting Platinum to replace his wife Tina after he accidently killed her. The other three were built partly to resemble the three members of the Justice League and were equipped with Mother Boxes for rapid transit. With them, he used them to assassinate the scientists of Project: Fair Play and framed the Justice League for their murders. This brought hostilities between the Justice League and the United States government allowing for Magnus to move forward with his plans to implant everyone in the world with nanites. Wonder Woman destroyed Tin and sent Platinum into the sun whilst Superman destroyed the merged form of the other three by smashing them into lava deep underground.
