Biography

Mewtwo was a genetically engineered Pokémon created from the DNA of Mew that was found in the Guyana jungle. The genetic material of the species was discovered and brought to a Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island. For years, scientists conducted horrific gene splicing and DNA engineering experiments leading to the creation of Mewtwo.

According to one account, Mewtwo had been created by a group of scientists led by Dr. Fuji who was working for Team Rocket. Its companion in these early days was Ambertwo, a clone of Fuji's deceased daughter Amber, who sadly perished much like the girl she was cloned from, though he doesn't have any memories of these events except Amber's last words which was 'life was wonderful', but he doesn't know why. After learning that the scientists regarded it a merely an experiment and not as a living creature of worth, it becomes filled with rage. It destroys the laboratory, and is approached by the arriving Giovanni with an offer to learn to control its powers. Wearing a form of armor, Mewtwo was used against Gary Oak in a gym battle after aiding Giovanni in a series of other victories. Oak came to describe it as an 'evil' Pokémon to Ash Ketchum, who did not get the chance to see it. Mewtwo escaped from Giovanni after finding out that he and the humans were not partners, but rather that Giovanni regarded it as a weapon.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Mewtwo was a bipedal, feline-like Pokémon whose form was loosely based on Mew, with a more of a mutated humanoid look in addition to its feline traits. Its body is purplish-gray and light purple and it has three fingers on each hand, with only two toes on its feet. The ears Mew had have been replaced with somewhat horn-like extrusions Mewtwo projects a faint purple aura when at full power.

Mewtwo started out as extremely arrogant, cold, and aggressive. It was also antisocial and does not smile very much, but it has been seen smirking at times.

Powers and abilities

Mewtwo was the result of genetic recombination of Mew's DNA that was born from Mew similar to real life clones. Whilst most Pokémon are hatched from eggs, Mewtwo was the only Pokémon that was born.

The intention behind its creation was to be 'the strongest Pokémon ever'. Due to genetic engineering being applied to a sample of Mew's DNA in order to fully create Mewtwo's genome, Mewtwo was an extremely powerful psychic, yet its abilities surpass Mew's due to intentional alterations to the genetic source material. As such, it can use telekinesis for flight, to shield itself, or to powerfully throw opponents aside.

Mewtwo was not capable of evolving. However, it can Mega Evolve with the use of a Mewtwonite X or a Mewtwonite Y.

Films

  • In Pokémon: The First Movie, Mewtwo featured in the setting of the 1998 anime film where he was voiced by Japanese actor Masachika Ichimura and by English actor Philip Bartlett in the dub. This version was shown as being a creation of the criminal organization Team Rocket, and was referred to as a clone instead of a genetically modified mammal. After Mewtwo destroyed the laboratory where it was born where Team Rocket's leader, Giovanni, convinced Mewtwo he can help it control its powers but instead used Mewtwo as a weapon. After escaping Giovanni, Mewtwo questioned the reason for its existence and declared revenge on its creators. To this end, it lures several Pokémon trainers, among them protagonist Ash Ketchum, to its island in order to clone their Pokémon. Once it does so, Mewtwo forced the originals to battle their clones in an effort to determine which set was superior, whilst Mewtwo faced its own genetic relative, Mew. Ash sacrificed himself to stop the fighting, though he was later revived from tears shed by both the originals and clones because of his sacrifice.
