Mickey Smith was spending time with his girlfriend, Rose Tyler, when she was nearly killed during the sudden destruction of her workplace. Following the incident, he picked Rose up, comforted her, and offered to take her to a local pub to recover. While loading her salvaged belongings into his car, he was instructed by Rose to dispose of a disembodied, living plastic mannequin arm that she had collected during her escape. The following day, Mickey Smith permitted Rose to use his personal computer to research a mysterious stranger known as the Doctor. He subsequently drove her to a suburban home to meet Clive, a conspiracy theorist who had been tracking the Doctor's historical appearances. While waiting alone in his parked car outside the residence, Mickey Smith observed a plastic wheelie bin moving on its own before the container abruptly consumed him. He was held captive underground by an extraterrestrial entity called the Nestene Consciousness, which used his likeness to create a living plastic duplicate to interrogate Rose. After being discovered and freed by the Doctor and Rose, a terrified Mickey Smith clung tightly to his girlfriend and hid behind the Doctor to avoid the ensuing alien conflict. Following the destruction of the Nestene Consciousness, Mickey Smith was returned safely to his estate, where he visibly panicked when the Doctor offered to let Rose travel inside his time machine.
