Microverse (Marvel)

The Microverse is a universe that features in Marvel Comics.

History

Origin

The Microverse was a parallel extradimensional universe that could be accessed through shrinking ones mass in order to access that space. (Fantastic Four v1 #282)

At some point, the Microverse was said to had been breached by Symbiotes that began to consume it and its inhabitants. The very nature of the Symbiotes was poisonous to this reality's existence. In fact, they nearly destroyed the Microverse and even the Enigma Force itself after attempting to bond with it to consume it. However, the Enigma Force ultimately destroyed the parasitic beasts and expelled them from the Microverse. (Scarlet Spider v2 #11)

The microworld of Mita was terrorized by the tyrant named Togaro who sought to take over that world. The rulers of Mita sent their daughter Dianna to Earth where she was adopted and grew to adulthood. Togaro learned of Dianna's fate in 1942 and launched an attack on Earth, drawing the attention of wartime heroes Captain America and Bucky. (Captain America Comics v1 #25)

In reality, he was transported into the Microverse where he appeared in the star-system of Sub-Atomica. There he conquered the world of Mirwood and used shrink rays to get revenge against the Fantastic Four. When the FF followed him to the Microverse Doom captured the quartet and attempted to give them as slaves to the Lizard Men of the planet Tok. The Fantastic Four were rescued by the size-changing hero Ant-Man and they crushed Doom's empire forcing Doom to flee back to Earth, and the heroes followed quickly after him. Modern

Months ago, the Baron joined forces with Thanos where the pair sought to destroy all subatomic realities leading to the Microns alongside others opposing them. This event led to a massive release of energy that resulted in the merger of all the micro-realms into Microverse. (Captain Marvel v4 #6)

Sometime ago, a mad geneticist in the Microverse sought to create weapons and bred organisms from the Body Banks. The creatures, however, managed to escape where they mutated and evolved into a group-mind with them being considered a threat leading to them being hunted and persecuted. In time, the intelligent viral race came to realise that the Microverse was limited and thus they dispatched scouts into the higher dimensions. This led to their emergence in a human body where they at first did not realise what had happened as they had taken control of a host. At first, they believed they had taken control of a biological vessel but came to realise that it was a living being and that their mind-sharing ability allowed them to take control of such individuals. Thus, they determined a means of escape their dimension and expanding by infesting individuals from the Macroverse without any need for violence as they sought to bring peace by taking control of all living beings. (Wolverine v5 #6)

During the Skrull Secret Invasion, Jane van Dyne was seemingly killed as her body exploded though in reality she was catapulted into the Microverse and remained trapped there for sometime. She sought a means of alerting the Avengers about her fate and struggled to find the means of transmitting her Avengers emergency broadcast signal. During this time, her existence came to the attention of a local warlord named Lord Gouzar who sought her capture. (New Avengers v2 #32)

Hiro-Kala along with his entourage journeyed into the Microverse where they landed on the planet K'ai. (Realm of Kings: Son of Hulk v1 #1)

Giant Man, Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man later venture to the Microverse where they discover that Wasp was still alive following her supposed death during the Secret Invasion. They find Wasp fighting someone named "Lord Gouzar" who s the current despot of the Microverse.[2] Lord Gouzar then attacks the Avengers with his army after Thor fails to reason with him. Lord Gouzar's army subdues the Avengers yet Wasp escapes. When Lord Gouzar demands Wasp to surrender, she ends up attacking in micro-size until she ends up back to normal size and is captured by Lord Gouzar's men. With the Avengers captured, Lord Gouzar tries to use Captain America's shield to break open Iron Man's armor. Iron Man manages to regain consciousness and break free as an explosion is heard on Lord Gouzar's battleship.[3] Thor does an attack on Lord Gouzar's fleet as the rest of the Avengers get free. When Iron Man falls from the ship, Thor tries to catch Iron Man only to be shot back. With help from Giant Man, Thor manages to catch Iron Man while Captain America is launched towards Lord Gouzar. While Wasp warns the Microverse citizens to run when Lord Gouzar's ship is about to crash, Captain America demands that Lord Gouzar surrenders. When Lord Gouzar demands to know where Captain America is from, Wonder Man shows up and breaks Lord Gouzar's helmet. Iron Man recovers and starts to devastate Lord Gouzar's fleet. When Lord Gouzar still demands to know who they are, Wasp appears and unleashes a powerful sting attack as she shouts "The Avengers you complete @#$!." to defeated him. She then announces to the Microverse citizens are freed from the ruler Lord Gouzar. The Microverse citizens cheers, Wasp and the Avengers can returned home to their normal size.[4]

During the events of Infinity, a new hybrid Inhuman named Alice Kedzierski accidentally shrinks herself and her neighbors Soojin and Hana Rhee into the Microverse. Scarlet Witch sends the Wasp after them, where she is attacked by a vengeful Lord Gouzar. After Alice uses her powers to grow Hana to a gigantic size, the child crushes Gouzar underneath her foot, saving the group and allowing them to return home.[5]

After the civil war in the Microverse, S.H.I.E.L.D. assembled a team tasked with going into that dimension and helping people affected by the conflict. (Wolverine v5 #6)

An inhabitant of Sub-Atomica named Gargantua attempted to enlarge the Microverse in order to replace Macrospace and destroy everything there. This caused tears on Earth which attracted the attention of the Fantastic Four who came to convince Gargantua to abandon her plans. (Fantastic Four v6 #11)

Overview

Despite its name, the Microspace was said to actually be an extra-dimensionally space that could be accessed through mass being stabilised the zero point allowing entry into the parallel universe. (Fantastic Four v1 #282) It was said that the Microverse did not adhere to conventional science. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #658) Unlike the macroverse, it was said that the Microverses expanse was more limited. (Scarlet Spider v2 #11)

Locations in the Microverse included:

• K'ai : a world inhabited by various green-skinned people, mostly blonde, but otherwise human. While outwardly primitive, it had remnants of long-forgotten high technology and sorcery. (Incredible Hulk v1 #140) It was known for being a sentient world possessing a Worldmind. (Incredible Hulk v1 #610)
• Traan :
• Kaliklak :
• Coronar : a planet located in the Helion system in the Microverse with one notable location on it being Aurorae Falls. It was ruled by an empress and a royal family until they were deposed by a fanatical cult called the Scions of the Azure Flame. (Big Hero 6 v1 #2)

Within the Microverse was Sub-Atomica that contained micro-galaxies that contained a cluster of worlds. (Fantastic Four Annual v1 #5) There were millions of sentient planets located within the sub-atomic realm of the Microverse with these being embodied by the Worldmind. These living essences were able to speak to the mind of humanoids and had the power of healing them though was incapable of doing this to itself. For protection, the intelligence was able to combine the spirits of the dead to form a guardian known as a Warmind. (Incredible Hulk v1 #610)

One of the races of the Microverse became an intelligent virus with a collective consciousness that sought to infect and control every human being on Earth. (Wolverine v5 #8)

A form of script used by the inhabitants of this dimension was Microverse Sanskrit. (Wolverine v5 #6)

• Baron Zebek : Zebek of Aegyptus was a humanoid from Homeworld who came to conquer the Antica region and forced the Insectivorids into slavery where he ruled over them as a tyrant. (Alpha Flight v2 #10)
• Gouzar : a male warlord controlling a set region of space who eliminated everyone that had ever opposed him and had become an enemy of the Wasp Janet van Dyne after she became trapped in the Microverse. (New Avengers v2 #32)
• Marquis Radu : a hooded humanoid holding the title of Marquis where he came into power and believed that the Microverse belonged to him. Radu thus refused to share it with anyone including that universe's god who he intended to eliminate. It was known that he had pushed back the Psycho-Man and battled against Lord Gouldar. To accomplish his goals, he looked to use a Symbiote to help destroy god. (Scarlet Spider v2 #11)
• Superego : a female living world who was known as Superego the Living Atom who was harmed by rifts in space-time with the Future Foundation stabilizing her before she broke apart. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #658)
• Gargantua : a female scientist of Sub-Atomica who wanted to enlarge the Microverse to replace the larger Macroverse but was convinced to not go forward with her plans. (Fantastic Four v6 #11)

• Lumina : a female inhabitant of the planet Coronar where she was the Crown Princess and daughter of the planet's monarch Empress Hynodia. This was until Lumina was captured by the fanatical cult called the Scions of the Azure Flame in order to force the Empress to stand down from the throne. Members of the Royal Guard managed to free Lumina with the aid of Honey Lemon when her Power Purse accidentally transported her to Coronar. Owing an honor debt to Honey Lemon, Lumina agreed to join her back on Earth to defeat the supervillain Deadline whereupon she stayed for a time as a superhero with her taking the name Sunpyre in honor of Sunfire's sister. As a Coronarian, she had the power to ionise matter through a mentally triggered bioalchemical process allowing her to generate superheated plasma matter that she wielded in battle against enemies. (Big Hero 6 v1 #2)

Notes

• The Microverse was created by Ray Cummings and Syd Shores where it made its first appearance in Captain America Comics v1 #26 (March, 1943).
• Due to the Micronauts films rights residing with Paramount, Marvel were not allowed to make use of the name 'Microverse'.

In other media

Television

• In Fantastic Four, the Microverse made an appearance in the 1994 animated series which was shown in the episode "World Within Worlds". It was an inhabited dimension with a world ruled by the Psycho-Man that used Element M to power his psycho-technology. Mister Fantastic discovered it where he retrieved a sample of Element M with this attracting the attention of the Psycho-Man. He managed to use his technology to take control of the Invisible Woman and turning her into the villainous Malice who accompanied to his sub-atomic world. The Fantastic Four used the reductocaft to travel to the Psycho-Man's world in order to free Susan Storm.
• In Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes, the Microverse was mentioned and had a brief appearance in the episode "World's Tiniest Heroes". Its was studied by Reed Richards who learnt of an entire universe that existed between atoms. Richards conducted an experiment in matter reduction where he sent a probe into the Microverse to study it for an eventual exploration of that universe. The mini-Fantasticar absorbed some remnant Microverse energy that the Fantastic Four were exposed to causing them to gradually shrink to atomic size. Dr. Henry Pym (Ant-Man) stated that he had discovered it prior but had named it Sub-Atomica though Mister Fantastic contested this designation stating that he preferred Microverse as they already had a Subterranea. After shrinking to microscopic size, Mister Fantastic was able to manipulate atoms to restore the Fantastic Four back to normal size.

Films

• In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Quantum Realm appeared in the shared continuity setting:
  • In Ant-Man, though the Microverse was not referenced in the live-action movie there was a dimension introduced called the Quantum Realm. It could be accessed through shrinking by means of Pym Particles and was a area where all concepts of time as well as space became irrelevant with an individual potentially being lost for all eternity within it. During the Cold War, Janet van Dyne intentional broke her suits Regulator allowing her to shrink to deactivate a bomb but became lost in the quantum realm. Scott Lang similarly broke his Regulator and began shrinking into the Quantum Realm where he lost consciousness but was saved with him being returned to normal size.
  • In Ant-Man and the Wasp, the Quantum Realm appeared again within the live-action sequel with Hank Pym and Hope Pym looking for a means of recovering Janet van Dyne after they learnt that she was alive but trapped in that dimension.
  • In Avengers: Endgame, the Quantum Realm briefly appeared in the setting of the live-action film crossover.
  • In Ant-Man 3: Quantamania, the Quantum Realm featured heavily in the setting of the live-action film. Due to it being outside of time, it was used as a prison for one variant of Kang the Conqueror who was exiled by his kin following the re-emergence of the Multiverse. Trapped there, he came upon a similarly stranded Janet van Dyne who was unaware of Kang's history. Together, they worked to rebuild his vehicle that was fuelled by a Multiversal Power Core. At that point, Janet came to inadvertently learn of Kang's past and how he had destroyed entire universes. This resulted in her turning against him where she used Pym Particles to enlarge the engine core making it unusable by Kang. She then came to ally with various people in the Quantum Realm to fight against Kang who looked to take over this dimension. Ultimately, Janet was returned to Earth which allowed Kang to take over the Quantum Realm entirely. He came to build an army and looked to find a means of restoring the power core whereupon he intended to wage against his other variants in the Council of Kang. After Thanos's defeat, Cassie Lang came to look to study the Quantum Realm and sent a signal into that dimension where she inadvertently attracted the attention of Kang who had her along with the Pym family as well as the Langs dragged into the realm. Whilst there, several of them linked with the local resistance led by Jentorra and consisted of Quaz, Veb as well as Xolum. Meanwhile, Janet van Dyne came to learn that her former resistance colleagues such as Krylar had decided to side with Kang instead. Ant-Man was later forced to shrink the Multiversal engine core but when Kang kidnapped Cassie Lang then Scott Lang joined the freedom fighters as they waged siege on the villains city. They were ultimately able to defeat Kang who was killed in the fighting thus freeing the Quantum Realm from his tyranny.
