The Midgard Serpent, also known as the Jormungandr Mechanism, was an ancient device that featured in Tomb Raider Underworld.

Overview

The machine was actually created by the ancient Atlantean civilization and possessed the power of destroying the planet Earth. It was located deep underground and accessed only through an ancient city that was located on the ocean floor beneath the ice. The area where the Midgard Serpent appeared as a hell with numerous pillars that represented serpents standing high and observing travellers. Large pools were located at the bottom of certain chambers was filled with water.

A doorway was present that had numerous faces present on its surface. By manipulating the pattern until all that remained was a skull, a person was capable of gaining entry into Yggdassil. Going through the corridors, a traveller eventually reached a large chamber with numerous cogs and pillars being present which represented part of the Midgard Serpent. This was Jormungandr which was a series of tectonic ridges that encircled the world on the ocean floor. The location was the weakest point in the pattern where the ancient supercontinent of Pangea was located and broke in two.

When activated again, the weapon unleashed its fury below where the very seams of the planet would burst. This was done so through the central pillar which served as a massive pile driver that smashed into the tectonic ridge. Once that was done, the Midgard Serpent was said to rise up once more where it spewed poison into the air whereupon the world was consumed with fire and ash. This would be the time of Ragnarok which would herald the start of the seventh age. Several large pieces of rock would rotate around the machine as its cogs were activated but it was capable of being stopped before it completed its purpose which was by activated a series of switches to end the machine. This was because the switches caused the supporting pylons to separate leaving the central pillar unstable which shattered as it attempted to activate.

An important element in the activation of the machine was Thor's Hammer which in turn required Thor's Gauntlets to wield. In its location of Helheim resided the Eitr liquid used to create thralls.
