The Midnight Circus is an organization that features in Karakuri Circus

History

The Midnight Circus was seemingly a travelling circus that were actually composed of mechanical automata developed by the alchemist Bai Jin. Their origins were traced to their creators mad obsession with a woman named Francine who was killed by a mob of villagers. With only strands of her hair, Bai Jin came to travel the world where he developed the Aqua Vitae and could construct life-like mechanical machines known as automata. He then looked to resurrect his beloved by using the strand of her hair and the Aqua Vitae thus creating a doll that he named Francine. Though overjoyed at her 'resurrection', he found that she was unable to smile despite her loyalty to him. Thus, he sought to entertain her by creating a circus of automata tasked with making her smile. This became the Midnight Circus where his crazed nature was passed to them as they killed townspeople as part of a murderous performance designed to make the Francine doll smile. In addition, Bai Jin had them disperse the Zonapha Syndrome among humans as punishment for the mistreatment made by the mob that killed the original Francine. The victims of Quiberon were later saved by a travelling Bai Yin who used the Aqua Vitae to create the Shirogane who sought vengeance against the automata and used puppets in their battles to destroy their foes in the Circus.

Overview

In appearance, the Midnight Circus appeared as an exaggerated mobile circus that travelled the world.

The four leaders of the circus were the Les Quatre Pionniers (The Four Pioneers) who commanded the rest of their kind and had absolute loyalty to the doll Francine.

Key among its personnel were the Automata (オートマータ) that were self-operating mechanical constructions. They were known to come in a variety of shapes and sizes with them possessing different characteristics.

One variety were self-destructors that were designed to explode if they experienced any damage except for those from close quarter martial arts.

They were the ones responsible for spreading Z.O.N.O.P.H.A. virus that was created by microscopic automatons.

• Francine : a doll like recreation of a human named Francine who was the obsession of their creator Bai Jin but because she could not smile he broke her but she was repaired by the first automatons with them still performing their duty in trying to make her smile.
• Francine : a second copy of Francine made by the Doll Francine to replace her after she left the Midnight Circus.

• Magdalen : a male automata who was among a group that attacked a plane containing Guy Christophe Resh and a group of shiroganes where they looked to crash the aircraft to kill the puppeteers only to be destroyed by their foes.
• Mr. Spazza : a male insectile male automata who led similar insectoids in an attack on a plane to kill a group of shiroganes but was destroyed by Guy Christophe Resh.
