Biography
Mister Jip was originally a male human born several centuries ago on a far off continent as the child of simple parents who lived a life of toil. As a youth, he rejected this life where he had a disdain for it and would set out to roam the world in order to study its myriad mysteries. Through study, he looked to conquer the hidden secrets in the world. It was then that he came to learn of a fabulous city where disease, poverty, pain and labour were unknown. The journey was slow and difficult where he crossed deserts and oceans over the course of years. This saw him approach the fabled city of Kamar-Taj that was hidden high up the snow-capped tops of the Himalayas. Upon arriving though, he came to find the city in ruin where it was afflicted with plague and its fabled golden period being over. This broke the young man who wept as a result when he was met by one of the survivors of the city who took pity on the youth. The man found the youth's aspirations for gaining knowledge to be endearing and offered to teach him mystical lore. Thus, he came to be the first student of the sorcerer who came to be known as the Ancient One. For decades, he assisted his 'master' and feigned an interest in benevolent magic as he studied collections of arcane lore. However, he studied forbidden lore but his eventual practice of the black rites led to his banishment by his master. It was then that his goal came to know the dark ways and thereby gain omnipotence over all. However, he was not blessed with long life like the Ancient One but learnt of a process of usurping the body of other people. (Strange Tales v2 #11)
He created the bizarre creature, Yipyap, to seek out evil people for him to usurp. Jip lived for many years in this manner, usurping body after body. In more recent years, Jip had created agents for him, called Night and Day. At one point, Yipyap found the hero known as Cloak and the darkness he contained. Jip planned to usurp Cloak's body. (Strange Tales v2 #11)
Jip helped various people in the neighborhood, granting their hearts desires. Cloak now desperate, hears about the miracles the shop provided and enters. Jip, in the guise of a middle-aged shopkeeper, gave him a black cube in return for future services. (Strange Tales v2 #11)
Dagger did leave at first, but she returned just in time to find Jip in the process of usurping Cloak's body. Dagger defended Cloak and defeated Jip's agents, Night and Day. The battle caused the being known as 'the Predator' to exit through Cloak, and attacked Day. The Predator scared Jip so bad that he fled. (Strange Tales v2 #11)
Jip also used the X-Men as his agents once during the events of Atlantis Attacks. He repulsed an attempt by the members of the Serpent Society to steal one of his mystical artifacts. He temporarily switched the minds of the captive Dazzler and Diamondback into each other's bodies. He fomented a battle between the X-Men and the Serpent Society. However, he failed to prevent the theft of his artifact by Sidewinder and Diamondback, who turned it over to their clients Ghaur and Llyra. (X-Men Annual v1 #13)
Mister Jip later bargained with Doctor Doom to trade Dagger for a book of black magic in Doom's possession. Jip murdered Francis Delgado and usurped his body. As Delgado, he murdered Father Michael Bowen, Dagger's uncle, and in disguise accompanied Dagger to Latveria. (Mutant Misadventures of Cloak and Dagger v1 #12) Jip's attempt to deliver Dagger to Doctor Doom was foiled by Cloak, Night, Brigid O'Reilly and "Rusty" Nales. Jip restored Dagger's sight, but was seemingly destroyed by a 'bullet of living darkness' formed by Night and fired by Rusty. (Mutant Misadventures of Cloak and Dagger v1 #13)
