In the Old Testament of the Bible, Moloch was a (false) fire god worshipped by the idolatrous Israelites. He received firstborn children as sacrifices, who were burned alive in a golden calf idol filled with flames. His worship was abolished by King Josiah of Judah, who destroyed Moloch's idols. Researchers have associated Moloch with Baal.

Moloch was later recast as a prince of Hell who delighted in stealing women's children.
