History

The Multiverse was a near-infinite number of different planes.

The Elder Dragon War was a great conflict in the mythohistory of Dominaria between beings collectively known as Elder Dragons. In the aftermath of the four or five thousand year conflict, only seven of these Dragons survived. The rest were killed or stripped of their powers.

Long before New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse, the Coin Empire invaded Ixalan's Core. Initially pleading for refuge in the Core, the Coin Empire soon turned hostile against the Oltec, eventually caging the inner sun Chimil within an assembly of their invasion ships. Mobilized against their invaders, the Echoes, and subsequently the Oltec, waged The Night War against the Coin Empire. This went on for 320 years and was ultimately brought to an end when their final assault against the prison weakened its infrastructure enough for Chimil to destroy it. Cosmium metal would bleed out from the sun in the aftermath of the conflict, mixing with some debris of the destroyed ships to form the reef that currently encircles it.

Overview

Dominia came to be an outdated name for the entire Multiverse. The Nexus of the Multiverse is a plane in the center of the Multiverse with a great influence on all other planes. The world of Dominaria is known to have been the Nexus. Since the plane had only been in existence for a finite amount of time.

Urza believed that there was a finite number of planes, merely more than can ever be counted in the combined lifetime of every being in existence. Other sources have noted that the Multiverse is "boundless" and that planes are "countless" and perhaps infinite.

Worlds that existed in the Multiverse included:

  • Ulgrotha : a small backwater plane, far from Dominaria, sometimes called the "Homelands" by its inhabitants.
  • Rath :
  • Zendikar :
  • Ravnica :
  • Ixalan : a pan-Mesoamerican-inspired plane full of uncharted jungles where dangerous beasts, magnificent ruins, and lost treasures lie waiting to be discovered.
  • Innistrad : a plane is primarily populated by Humans but these live in fear of several classical creatures of horror and regularly fall prey to Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires, or Ghosts. Further, Demons are becoming an ever-growing threat. Life on Innistrad is dominated by the single moon in its sky. Though the inhabitants of the plane know little about it, the moon drives the seasons and also the hunting patterns of the monsters, harvests of the Humans.

Creatures native to the Multiverse included:

  • 'Dragons ':

Races native to the Multiverse included:

  • Beast Walkers :
  • Thran :
  • Eldrazi : a creature type describing an ancient race native to the Blind Eternities that have neither physical form nor color alignment. Their nature is ceaseless hunger, so they travel between planes devouring the mana and life energy until the plane's destruction. Three Eldrazi titans were previously bound on Zendikar: Emrakul, Ulamog, and Kozilek. Emrakul warps biology, Ulamog warps physical properties, and Kozilek warps reality.
  • Phyrexians :

Organizations that existed in the Multiverse included:

  • Coin Empire :
  • Order of Heliud : a religious organization that expanded across numerous planes. It strives to bring “harmony, protection, and law to the Multiverse".
  • Gatewatch : a group of planeswalkers initially allied together to fight the Eldrazi on Zendikar. Named for their defense of Sea Gate. Their commitment is to protect the people of the Multiverse from threats that no one else can handle
  • Church of the Incarnate Soul :
  • Church of Avacyn : a major religious institution on Innistrad. It was the primary religion of humanity for the plane.
  • Legion of Dusk :
  • Maestros :
  • Dark Barony : the kingdom consisting of the lands of Baron Sengir, who ruled from Castle Sengir on Ulgrotha.

Planeswalkers (or 'walkers) are among the most powerful beings in the multiverse.
