Biography

The Celestial Man in Defenders v1 #34.

Nebulon

They were described as being part of a race of interstellar geologists that surveyed the cosmos for various materials needed to ensure their homeworld's continued existence. (Defenders v1 #14) During his childhood, he came to be betrothed to Supernalia who was first his friend before she came to be his wife. (Avengers Annual v1 #11)

Unlike others of his kind though, he was largely unsuccessful in achieving his objective which would have led to his disgrace. He was unsuccessful in his efforts and had only thirty galactic units left to find such a planet before he would be considered a failure. At some point, he came to take on a human-like form. In his ship, Nebulon found a drifting Hyperion, of the Squadron Sinister, who had been set adrift shrunken in a bubble of sand. After Nebulon explained his quest, Hyperion offered to sell Nebulon the planet Earth and Nebulon agreed. (Defenders v1 #14) Nebulon was also the one responsible for restoring the abilities of the members of the Squadron Sinister. At first, Nighthawk wanted nothing to do with them but Nebulon's power easily caused him to stay and he was forced to participate in the plan. This involved using a high powered laser weapon to melt the ice caps and flood the Earth in a great deluge with this being the desired state of the world for the Celestial Man. Such a cold blooded scheme horrified Nighthawk who secretly sought to subvert his allies plans. (Defenders v1 #13) At Hyperion's request, Nebulon did not destroy the Defenders but set them adrift in space. They managed to return, and Nebulon created a creature from ice, whom Hulk called the Frozen Man, that the heroes also defeated. Despite a series of tactics to defeat the heroes himself, Nebulon was overwhelmed by an attack by Strange and reverted to his true form. When Nighthawk turned the laser cannon on him, Nebulon was inundated by the power and imploded, taking the three Squadron villains with him. (Defenders v1 #14)

Against Dr. Strange's powers, Nebulon's dimension-spanning powers were overloaded and he came to find himself hurled out of existence across the planes of existence. He came land on the world of Zaar which was home to the Ludberdites who were a race of scientist-philosophers that believed that higher order beings had an obligation to better the lives of their inferiors. Whilst among them, the Celestial Man came to embrace their beliefs as his own whilst he stayed under their tutelage. (Defenders v1 #34) Nebulon chose to remain with the alien Ludberdites, but sent the Squadron back to Earth with an energy-absorbing gun they could get revenge on the Defenders. (Giant-Size Defenders v1 #4) Nebulon brought the Ludberdites to Earth, the most savage planet he had seen, and planned to help humans recognize their destiny. (Defenders v1 #34) The Celestial Man had the Ludberdites begin gathering humans and creatures. (Defenders v1 #33) At first, Nebulon was thrilled to see 'Nighthawk,' who agreed to join the other human captives. Nebulon disguised himself as a short bald man and traveled to Earth to get the attention of New York's citizens. He put them at ease, stating he could help them to achieve their utmost. When the Hulk landed, Nebulon easily contained the Hulk in a sphere and sent him into space, giving the surrounding people just a glimpse of his true nature. Women began fawning all over him and he spread fliers stating he'd be having a free seminar on Celestial Mind Control at the Park Plaza that night. At the hotel, Nebulon gave a confrontational speech about how humanity was required to admit that they were Bozos before they could achieve peace and potential. He enticed those in the crowd to put on the bozo masks contained under their chairs. He invited one man on stage and showed the skeptical man the culling of humanity they'd developed their concept from, including 'Nighthawk' and 'Bambi.' The man, who turned out to be Dr. Strange, resisted, and Nebulon attacked him and allies Hulk and Valkyrie with a blast that felled them all. Before Strange could attack again, 'Bambi' then tapped into Nebulon's powers and teleported both of them away. (Defenders v1 #34)

Though dead, his spirit survived as a ghost where he journeyed into the afterlife and gained far greater power than he ever did in life. He forged a deal in one of the various Hells with a group of minor demons who trafficked in souls. To gain a profit, they wanted the death of billions in order to gain their souls as currency. Thus, Nebulon returned to the mortal realm where he managed to hijack the body of the being known as the Conductor who moved his cosmic train through the universe. The undead being sought to direct the Conductor onto a path towards Earth with the goal of destroying the world responsible for his death so that their souls could be claimed and Nebulon could also get his revenge. (Defenders: The Best Defense v1 #1)

Alternate Versions

  • In Defenders: The Best Defense v1 #1 (2018), an alternate version of Nebulon was shown in a possible future where his plot to use the Conductors cosmic train was intercepted by Galactus who destroyed the gigantic construct. However, the destruction from the train caused a wave of radiation that scorched numerous worlds including Earth thus killing most of the people on the planet. The world's Stephen Strange sought to avert this timeline and sent his astral projection back into the present day to warn the Defenders though this act destroyed his body leaving him as a formless spirit.
