The Night Raid (Japanese: ナイトレイド, Hepburn: Naito Reidō) was an elite covert operations unit that was part of the Revolutionary Army and tasked with conducting missions from within the capital of the Empire.

Following the return of General Esdeath, she became charged with eliminating Night Raid. Initially, she attempted to frame them for the murder of the ministers enemies. Her lieutenants were, however, killed during an engagement with Night Raid assassins. As a result, she decided to create a new unit of skilled operatives to kill Night Raid with this group being named the Jaegers.

The division outside the capital was completely destroyed by the Three Beasts where its only survivor being Chelsea who was soon transferred to Night Raid's capital group.

Night Raid proved to be instrumental in the downfall of the Empire, leading to the defeat/deaths of many high profile Empire officials including Budo, Esdeath, the Emperor, and Honest. Of the eight notable members of Night Raid throughout the events of the war, only four had survived: Najenda, Akame, Tatsumi and Mine

After the fall of the Empire, the Night Raid organization was dissolved due to the immoral actions they had committed. The revolutionary army came to take over and transitioned the empire into autonomous federalized republic with Najenda now its new leader. All trace of Night Raid including all the heroic deeds of its members faded into history with the public never knowing of its existence.

In the anime, the group succeeded in their mission with only Najenda and Akame being the only survivors.

Overview

In appearance, the Night Raid were an elite band of assassins tasked with the elimination of high priority targets. Their main function was to handle intelligence and assassinations within the capital of the Empire. Though to the general public, they came to offer themselves as assassins for hire when they were not undertaking missions from HQ.

They were also charged with the retrieval of any Teigu discovered in order to boost the combat effectiveness of the Rebel Army.

Originally, they were composed of two groups with one operating within the Empire's capital and the other stationed in the surrounding area.

The members of Night Raid did not see themselves as heroes as they carried any task with deeds not going being carried out for good, belief in a cause or any virtue.

Typically, they tended to conduct their operations at night time.
