Biography

Asa

Her previous host body she had been using for almost 300 years to the point that she could no longer reside on it. (Justice League Dark v1 #32) As an old woman, Asa came to find herself in service to the Winters family where she cared for their daughter Alice Winters since childhood. The family lived in a mansion in upstate New York where as a young woman Alice Winters found herself dying from a disease. All attempts at healing her at failed with Asa being by her side as she the young woman waited for death. As she grew weaker, Asa decided to use her as a new host body to replace her old one and took possession of it with Alice's personality being buried deep underneath that of the Nightmare nurse. (Justice League Dark v1 #31) Despite the malevolence of the act, Asa claimed that she did it out of kindness and looked to save the girl. (Justice League Dark v1 #32) However, Alice's recollection was that of a demon that had forcibly taken control of her body. (Justice League Dark v1 #31)

Nightmare Nurse materialized within a mystical hospital setting, immediately attending to the critically injured form of the Phantom Stranger. She initiated her activities by utilizing her glowing surgical gloves to palpate the Stranger's ethereal wounds, diagnosing his spiritual instability through direct touch. She demonstrated her technical proficiency by wielding an oversized mystical needle to inject an enchanted fluorescent liquid directly into his torso, a procedure that stabilized his failing life force. During the encounter, she projected a circular energy barrier to repel an encroaching supernatural entity, maintaining the shield while simultaneously continuing her medical work. She moved through the environment with a combination of brisk walking and brief periods of levitation to reach elevated surgical instruments. She displayed the ability to perceive and interact with the 'ghost' of a person's soul, physically grasping a flickering spirit to prevent it from dissipating into the afterlife. Furthermore, she manipulated a series of mystical monitors that tracked the metabolic rates of magical beings, adjusting her treatment based on the shifting data. She concluded her actions by administering a potent alchemical vapor that induced a forced state of regenerative stasis in her patient, before she began preparing for an expedition into a different dimensional plane to retrieve a missing soul. (Phantom Stranger v4 #8)

As the war with the Blight escalated, Asa’s skills became indispensable to the Justice League Dark in the field. When Chris Esperanza was overtaken by the spreading corruption, Asa stepped in to prevent his soul from being consumed entirely. Unlike her earlier healings, this was not a private ritual but an open battle against a hostile force, requiring her to create wards in mid-air, carve sigils into the ground, and bind the Blight’s infection with ropes of light drawn from her fingertips. She treated Esperanza’s body like a battlefield wound, cutting away the infection as though excising a tumor, all while resisting the pull of the Blight herself. In doing so she revealed the true depth of her power, showing that her healing was not the mending of comfort and recovery, but an act of violent exorcism that left both healer and patient scarred. Her intervention saved Esperanza, but it also cost her strength, leaving her visibly strained and bitter at the demands constantly placed upon her. (Justice League Dark v1 #25)

Her bond to Alice Winter, the human vessel she inhabited, was exposed during her continued association with the team. In one confrontation within the House of Mystery, Alice was forced to confront the truth that Asa’s presence in her body was both a violation and a lifeline. Asa defended her actions with sharp logic, insisting that without her Alice would be long dead, though others questioned whether she had prolonged Alice’s existence for her own purposes. The exchange revealed the parasitic duality of the Nurse: she could not exist in this realm without a host, yet her mastery of healing meant that her host was preserved, suspended between life and death. Asa showed little remorse for the suffering she caused Alice, framing it as a necessity, and it was this cold pragmatism that made her so difficult for the League to fully trust. (Justice League Dark v1 #29)

Intoxicated by the power within the Zatanna, Asa went on a rampage and turned on her team mates who were forced to battle her. In an attempt to pull the Nightmare Nurse out of Zatanna, John accidentally pulled the entire House of Mystery into the realm known as the Between. This put the team in danger, as the consciousness of the Between threatened to consume everybody within it. Asa explained that she had actually saved Alice, and then sacrificed herself to the Between in order to heal its hunger, and save the rest of the Justice League Dark. However, Zatanna had actually taken a fragment of Asa's soul in what appeared to just be a kiss, and used that to resurrect her, and save Alice, who was dying of the same disease that had ailed her decades earlier now that the Nightmare Nurse had left her body. Nightmare Nurse possessed Alice again, but this time with her host's blessing, and the promise not to bury her consciousness this time. (Justice League Dark v1 #32)
