Nightwing (Tangent)
Nightwing is a government agency that features in Tangent Comics.
History
Nightwing was created in an alternate reality known as Earth-9 where the superhero known as the Atom saved the planet during the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis. This led to President Kennedy deciding that the world needed an agency tasked with policing the emergence of superhumans. Thus, he authorized the creation of the organization called Nightwing that was enshrined in law with this tasked. Despite this being the case, the agency began to stray in time from their original mandate when they began spending much of their budget in technological research. This was in the hopes of protecting America from both superhumans and the Soviet Union. One of their initiatives was spreading their computer network around the planet where they allowed people to communicate to one another instantly but also allowed the agency to spy on the homes of these individuals. Other objectives included a project to research magic where they recuited a group of magicians called the Dark Circle and even began studying means of creating their own superhumans through the use of the substance called Miraclo.
These initiatives eventually reached their desired goal with a new wave of costumed heroes emerging in 1996 where Nightwing was ready to not only monitor them but counter their efforts. This saw them create their own team of superheroes called Night Force who were unaware of their true origins and were secretly being used to achieve the agency's own interests. However, in 1998, a Soviet created entity called the Ultra-Humanity was created by their scientists which Nightwing was powerless to defend against and were unable to protect the American armed forces. They proved to be equally powerless against the Superman that was created as a result of covert superhuman research. Following the destruction of the Ultra-Humanite, the Superman disbanded Nightwing and took over the Earth. However, several former agents of Nightwing continued to operate and attempted to dethrone the Superman.
