History

The SSV Normandy SR-1 was a type of interstellar vessel that was developed by the Systems Alliance. The prototype vessel was created with the assistance of the Citadel Council with it being a joint human and turian venture where it was designed for scouting and reconnaissance missions in unstable regions.

Overview

In appearance, the SSV Normany SR-1 was a frigate optimized for reconnaissance missions where it utilised state-of-the-art stealth technology.

One of the key features of the ship was state-of-the-art stealth technology whereby the ship could temporarily sink their heat within the hull. Refrigeration on the exterior hull came to dampen the heal that normally allowed a ship to be detected in the absolute-zero background of space. This allowed the Normandy to travel undetected for hours or drift passively for days during periods of covert observation. However, the stored heat must eventually be radiated or it would build to levels that could cook the crew alive. Another aspect of the stealth system was the revolutionary Tantalus drive that was a mass effect core twice the normal size. It generated mass concentrations that the ship 'fell into' allowing it to move without the use of heat-emitting thrusters.
