History

Nucleic Exchange Research and Development (N.E.R.D.) was a laboratory that was founded by Transgenic Developers Elsa Kast and Clive Nicoli. It was funded by the research division of Newstead Pharma and focused on gene-splicing and protein production thus it became dedicated to pushing to the forefrunt of genetic research. It was known to splice together the DNA of various species in order to create new organisms and attempted to isolate entirely new proteins that could be used for medicinal purposes. Amongst its most noted accomplishment was the creation of identical hybrid organisms spliced from piscis, simianus, aves, and many other genomes. The first was a female designated Subject H-48 AKA Ginger and demonstrated stable bioinformatics with a high survivability index. A male was later created for her in the form of a male specimen later designated Fred for the purpose of breeding this new species. Following this success, Dr. Kast and Dr. Nicoli intended to revolutionize science and medicine by attempting to create a hybrid using human DNA but were forbidden to do so by the pharmaceutical company. Instead, they mandated that their department be re-organized on focusing on finding and extracting certain proteins from the creatures that were already created.

Unknown to anyone, the two scientists conducted their own secret experiment in blending human DNA with that of other animals that led to the creation of an organism later called Dren. Their focus on this line of research led to Kast and Nicoli to neglecting their work. The two failed to read the logs kept by other lab technicians on the progress of the original animal hybrids. Eventually, a highly publicized unveiling ceremony was made for the two specimens. However, instead of mating, the hybrids Fred and Ginger violently kill one another. The resultant action created a public relations disaster for the N.E.R.D. company and it was later discovered that the female hybrid Ginger spontaneously changed into a male leading to the violent confrontation. The circumstances with Dren later led to an incident where the hybrid went violent and attacked numerous people at Dr. Kast's farm estate until the creature was killed.

Afterwards, Elsa Kast met with the heads of the N.E.R.D. pharmaceutical company where they tell her that Dren was quite valuable as its body contained countless chemical compounds and genes that had not been seen before. Thus, the company would be filling out the patents for years and provided Kast with a very generous amount of money in exchange for her silence over the Dren experiment as well as taking the project to the next stage. Its revealed that Dr. Kast was raped by Dren when it changed gender and became a male which led to Elsa becoming pregnant with its child who was seemingly willing to continue the experiment.

Background

The ultimate aim of the company was to bend DNA technology to the will of science and bio-engineering. Thus, they used techniques to create new forms of life and to cure most known diseases as well as benefit the world. It was claimed that their research and experimentation results were available to the specialized scientific community. N.E.R.D. scientists were seemingly keen on communicating with the larger community of scientists in order for them to look at the future of life sciences and bio-engineering. Whilst its scientists worked to study genetic splicing, it was forbidden to use human DNA to create a hybrid species.

Their experimentation led to the gestation of spliced organisms inside a gestation device known as BETI. BETI mimicked an actual womb though it was remapped with biomechanical technology and any shots of the organism resembled a sonogram.
