History

The Order of Ancient Mysteries were an occult organization formed on Earth by Roderick Burgess. Burgess named himself grand magus of the Order and it served as a foil against contemporaries such as Aleister Crowley and his Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The Order was based out of Burgess' home Fawny Rig in Wych Cross, Sussex, England. In June of 1916, Burgess acquired a powerful mystic tome known as the Magdalene Grimoire. (Sandman v2 #1)

With it, he sought to gain power by using it to summon and capture the very personification of Death. The Order conducted an elaborate ritual, invoking the names of various old lords such as Namtar, Allatu, Morax, Naberius, Klesh, Vepar, Maymon, Ashema-Deva, Maborym and Horvendile. The Order failed to summon Death, but instead succeeded in capturing Death's younger sibling, Dream. Burgess knew immediately that his order had not captured Death, but he did recognize their prize as one of an immortal host of cosmic beings known as the Endless. The Order bound Dream inside of a mystic circle and contained his corporeal form beneath a large glass dome in the cellar at Fawny Rig. They tried to force him to do their bidding, but failed in every attempt. Dream sat silently in his glass cell, patiently waiting for the day that he might be free. (Sandman v2 #1)

Overview

In appearance, the Order of Ancient Mysteries was a specialized clandestine organization whose core administrative inner circle, chanting faculty, and manor security guards consisted entirely of adult human males and females. They featured standard bipedal human physical frameworks that spanned varying statures, ages, and civilian backgrounds, with their senior inner circle preserving ordinary physical dimensions during their indoor sanctuary operations. The organization adapted its visual presence to emphasize a highly traditional, formal, and academic occult aesthetic rather than state military fatigues or matching corporate jumpsuits. Their garments during high-stakes invocations consisted of elaborate, flowing fabric ceremonial robes finished in dark crimson, midnight-black, or deep purple hues, which were detailed with wide utility sashes and high collars to project mystical authority. The estate of Fawny Rig expanded the visual identity of the group through its dark, wood-paneled structural geometries, anchoring its layout around a stone-walled basement ritual chamber decorated with complex chalk geometries, burning metal censers, and a massive, thick glass globe cell positioned directly over an intricate painted binding circle. (Sandman v2 #1)

They relied on their comprehensive institutional studies and extensive private libraries to execute complex astrological calculations, decode dead languages, and process advanced occult theorems derived from ancient grimoires. They did not possess innate supernatural superpowers, organic shape-shifting attributes, or passive physical invulnerability, relying instead on exceptionally high human intellect, vast inherited fortunes, and specialized ritual artifacts. Their specialized capabilities allowed them to invoke the true names of ancient underworld powers—including Namtar, Allatu, Morax, and Naberius—to bridge dimensions and manifest a paracausal containment field capable of subduing a high-tier cosmic concept. The administration utilized Dream's stolen totems to artificially grant themselves extended lifespans, but they lacked the specific mystical power required to force an Endless entity to speak. Their primary capabilities allowed them to operate completely outside the tracking metrics of standard municipal police forces, isolate a major cosmic node from the universe, and maintain an unbroken, highly disciplined barrier of physical enforcement until internal schisms ultimately fractured the ranks.
