He was born in Chandigarh, India, an infant Metahuman with alabaster skin and superhuman durability. When his mother died during his birth, Desai created a sinkhole with a three-mile radius which killed thousands of people and left him the only survivor. Years later, Michael adopted the alias of the Outsider and accumulated considerable wealth through illegal activities. This allowed Desai to elevate India's status as a world power turning the country into a multinational criminal operation completely under his control. Outsider (Alfred Pennyworth, Earth-3)

Main Article: Alfred Pennyworth

The Outsider was Alfred Pennyworth from the alternate universe of Earth-3 where he was a butler to the Wayne family. During those years, he became secretly involved in a plot with Thomas Wayne, Jr. where they planned to murder the boys parents and claim their fortune. Thomas Wayne, Jr. drew his family to Crime Alley where he then pulled a gun on them where he intended to have his younger brother Bruce Wayne by his side. However, Bruce at that moment refused with Thomas Wayne, Jr. gunning down his family whereupon he left alongside Alfred Pennyworth where with his parents dead he took over the family fortune. (Justice League v2 #25) In the years afterwards, he continued to serve his master Thomas who became the masked crime lord called the Owlman who joined other villains within the ranks of the Crime Syndicate of America. In this time, Owlman's greatest enemy was a man named the Joker who nearly killed Thomas in a surprise attack. However, Pennyworth arrived at the scene with a shotgun where he wounded the Joker who in a dying act of revenge released a strange poison with Alfred being exposed to it. This left him in an uncontrollable state of laughter leaving his skin unnatural pale where he would have died from the poison had Owlman not found an antidote. He administered it to Alfred as a mark of his continued loyalty to his master yet it did not cure Pennyworth completely. Though recovering, he came to have a pale skin and could at times barely control his laughter where he took the name the Outsider as he continued to serve his master Thomas. (Justice League v2 #23.4)

The Secret Society was officially uncovered five years later by the Green Arrow when he tried to infiltrate the organization under the name Dark Hunter. The Outsider was seen looking to recruit members to the Secret Society, examining photographs of the different supervillains. (Justice League of America v3 #1)
