History

Pandora was the fifth moon of the gas giant Polyphemus that orbited Alpha Centauri A in the Alpha Centauri star system.

Diplomatic ties with the Na'vi were greatly strengthened in 2142 with the opening of Grace's schoolhouse, where curious Na'vi children could learn about and interact with humans in a safe environment. However, the schoolhouse would ultimately be closed 10 years later and humans forbidden from entering the Omatikaya's land following a massacre there by Sec-Ops mercenaries that resulted in the deaths of several students, including Sylwanin, who lost her life after she had destroyed RDA equipment in protest against the their deforestation.

Overview

The planetoid was the fifth moon of the gas giant Polyphemus which orbited Alpha Centauri A. It was located 4.423 light-years (26 trillion miles) from Earth.

Pandora's atmosphere is a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide (>18%), xenon (>5.5%), methane, and hydrogen sulfide (>1%) and is about 20% denser than the atmosphere on Earth primarily due to the high percentage of Xenon; a heavy, colourless, odourless, and generally unreactive noble gas. The high concentration of carbon dioxide in the Pandoran atmosphere makes it extremely poisonous and unbreathable to humans, rendering them unconscious in about 20 seconds and causing death in about 4 minutes when they venture out unprotected by specialized breathing masks. The hydrogen sulfide present is also quite hazardous; concentrations over 1000 ppm (0.1 %) can cause immediate collapse with subsequent loss of breathing, even after inhalation of a single breath.

Locations on Pandora included:

  • Hallelujah Mountains :
  • Eastern Sea :
  • Awa'atlu :
  • Hell's Gate :
  • Bridgehead :

Pandora was a treasure trove of both living and nonliving natural resources. It was the first celestial body to host intelligent sentient lifeforms away from Earth and is also home to a plethora of diverse and spectacular species unlike anything ever speculated by humanity. In terms of nonliving resources, several large areas of the moon's surface contain the extremely rare superconducting mineral unobtanium. This mineral is worth twenty million standard dollars per unrefined kilogram and twice that in its refined state. The mineral's superconductivity made it a baffling scientific discovery.

Life forms native to the planet included:

  • Banshee :
  • Great Leonopteryx :
  • Sturmbeest :
  • Direhorse :
  • Thanator :
  • Hammerhead Titanothere :
  • Viperwolf :
  • Stingbat :

Video games

  • In James Cameron's Avatar: The Game, Pandora featured as the setting of the 2009 video game.
  • In Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Pandora featured as the setting of the 2023 open world video game. Before the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains, the RDA's The Ambassador Program (TAP) abducted Na'vi children in an attempt to raise the Na'vi as if they were humans, and turn them against their own species. One of these children serves as the protagonist. The children were abducted by RDA leader John Mercer, but when the facility was attacked by the Na'vi clans during Pandoran War, the RDA ordered the execution of the children. The children were rescued by their teacher Alma Cortez who put the group of children in cryosleep. Fifteen years later, the children awoke and were free to explore their world. They are perceived as outsiders by other Na'vi and must reconnect with their original lost heritage. However, the RDA returned and the Na'vi must unite their clans to protect Pandora once more.
