Papa Midnite was described as being a legendary figure who was a crusader for good who swore the oath of neutrality in the war between heaven and hell. At some point, he became a bartender who opened a nightclub that served as a neutral ground for both sides to meet without incident. He stated that as long as the balance between the two was maintained then he would not taken any sides in the conflict. His bar had a relic called "The Chair" which was an old electric chair that allowed the user to see potent visions of the past or future. After being attacked by a carrion demon, Constantine decided to look for information at the Midnite bar. Chas Kramer reading about the magical world led to him learning of it as a haven for people who rose or fell though Constantine simply called it a bar. He asked Papa Midnite for the use of the Chair but the former witch doctor refused. Afterwards, Constantine forcibly entered into the club to access the Chair where he was attacked by Papa Midnite for the violation but John Constantine managed to convince him of his plight in stopping the coming of the Devil's Son to Earth. Papa Midnite would offer his aid and give prayers to both Constantine as well as Chas as they made their way to the site where Mammon would manifest on the mortal plane.
