Growing up in a broken home, Pete Stanchek spent his childhood dreaming about Kris Hathaway, the most popular girl in school, and wishing his parents would stop screaming at each other. Scarred by his father’s abuse, Pete grew into an indecisive weakling, but as his powers emerged and he felt like he was in control for the first time in his life, he matured into a true hero.

On February 17th 1991, Pete Stanchek and his best friend, Joe Irons, made their way across the school parking lot when Joe asked Pete if he received an answer to a letter he wrote to the Harbinger Foundation. As Pete replied that he was still waiting and expressed doubts about their legitimacy, Joe stopped to tie his shoe and asked him if he wanted to go down to the dump and practice his powers. While he gazed across a fence at Kris Hathaway, the most popular girl in school, Pete told Joe that he was going home. With a grin, Joe patted Pete and told him that guys like them could never get girls like Kris, but, as he walked away, Pete said that he could.

Three days later while Pete and Mrs. Stanchek, his mother, had an argument, Rachel Hopson, a Harbinger Foundation recruiter, came over to their house and asked him to go for a walk. During their stroll, Rachel told Pete that they were glad he wrote them because the foundation was set up specifically to help people like him, then she offered to pick him up the next day when he got out of school to take him to their office in Pittsburgh. Excitedly, Pete accepted Rachel’s invitation. When Pete returned home, his mother angrily asked him where he went. With a gleam in his eye, Pete told his mother to shut up, and, to his surprise, she became quiet and vacuumed the room.

The next day at school, Joe jokingly accused Pete of staring at Kris through the entire class and dared him to ask her out, when then Pete told him that he was just was about to do and walked over to her. When Pete asked Kris to go out with him on Saturday she intended to reject his invitation, but then his eye gleamed and, after she slurred for a moment, she told him that she would love to go out with him. Much to her friend's wonderment, Kris then took Pete's hand in hers and they walked away together, while Joe expressed his disbelief. After school, Rachel picked Pete up in a limo. Oblivious of Joe’s calls, Pete got in and met Eel and Weasel, two members of the Eggbreakers, a group of Harbingers who acted as Toyo Harada’s enforcers.

Peter Stanchek skipped across the country to flee the persistent pursuit of a man named Tull, struggling to manage his volatile, unmapped psionic capabilities while travelling alongside his schizophrenic companion Joe Irons. Seeking to ground himself, he returned to his former Pittsburgh neighbourhood to track down his childhood crush, Kris Hathaway, but his presence was heavily rejected because his historical mental instability had deeply terrified the young woman years prior. Peter Stanchek utilized his telepathic manipulation to subtly rewrite her mind and fabricate false feelings of romantic affection, successfully spending the night with her before his coordinates were exposed to the monitoring systems of the Harbinger Foundation. The following morning, his location was infiltrated by a projection projecting from a local dog, which revealed itself to be an illusion generated by the wealthy philanthropist Toyo Harada, a fellow Omega-level psiot who telepathically extended an invitation to instruct the teenager on mastering his vast powers under the explicit condition that he permanently abandon Joe Irons and release Kris Hathaway from his mental influence. Refusing to bow to the ultimatum, Peter Stanchek rejected the offer and instead leveraged his rare ability to jumpstart latent psychic gifts in others, successfully activating the dormant superhuman capabilities of Faith Herbert, Charlene DuPre, and John Torkelson. Operating as a unified teenage unit known as the Renegades, the group raided a local post office to secure resources before engaging in a direct, highly destructive skirmish against a heavily armed vanguard of foundation operatives led by Todd Bevins. Peter Stanchek successfully neutralized the immediate physical threat alongside his new teammates, declaring open war against Toyo Harada’s secret network before leading the squad out of the perimeter to stay one step ahead of the sprawling global conspiracy. He fled Pittsburgh alongside his newly formed band of teenage psiots to evade the sprawling search grid of the Harbinger Foundation. His group’s tactical movements were drastically complicated when their locations were exposed to the municipal authorities, triggering an intense, high-stakes confrontation with a heavily armed Pittsburgh S.W.A.T. tactical unit. Forced to utilize his volatile telepathic and telekinetic abilities completely out in the open to defend his companions, Peter Stanchek successfully neutralized the law enforcement ambush, but the highly public manifestation of his powers drew massive media attention and heavily intensified Toyo Harada's tracking operations. Grappling with severe internal guilt and the crushing realization that his mere presence placed Faith Herbert, Charlene DuPre, John Torkelson, and Kris Hathaway in constant mortal danger, Peter Stanchek faced a deeply painful personal ultimatum. He weighed the severe consequences of staying with the vulnerable runaways against an offer to abandon his team entirely and surrender his autonomy to the foundation in exchange for absolute sanctuary and mastery over his psionic gifts, ultimately choosing to maintain his open resistance against the global corporate conspiracy.
